Chance my genius of a friend

4.0 GPA - All honors/AP's

2390/1600 SAT's

National Merit Finalist

School swim team

Came in second in the National Brain Bee

This summer he was chosen to be on the four-person United States team for the International Chemistry Olympiad, which is a competition between over 70 countries. The US team did very well and he was the only person on the team to be awarded a gold medal. He is the first person in seven years to receive a gold medal in the competition from the united states.

Those are his major awards/EC's.

I tell him every single school in America is a safety, given his credentials, but he's modest and says he's not sure. He wants to go to Harvard.

What's CC's opinion?

I will echo my post on the main What are My Chances thread and say that he has great chances, but Harvard is not a safety for him.

While those credentials are impressive, schools like Harvard have plenty of applicants with impressive credentials and thus it’s impossible to ever consider Harvard a safety, especially since no other college can be more selective in comparison.

Just have him make good essays and get good teacher recommendations and he can sleep easy at night.

I can’t imagine if his essays and recommendations are decent that he won’t get in.

Harvard would have to find a really good reason not to admit an IChO gold medalist who also appears strong in other areas.

The fact that he’s an IChO gold metalist is enough to get him into any school, including Harvard. I think he’ll get in.

Every school isn’t a safety (and by no means Harvard, unless you’ve cured cancer), but it definitely isn’t a reach. =) He’s looking good for college admissions.

Um, you just gave away WAY too much information about this kid. I bet that with 15 minutes of googling, I can find his name, school, and picture. But, he has a great shot at Harvard. It’s not a safety though; Harvard is a reach for everyone.

In response to 1253729: So? I haven’t provided any information that isn’t already open to the public eye.

[Residence Hall Life | Bob Jones University](Bob Jones University | Accredited Christian Liberal Arts University)

He’d better start preparing for Bob Jones. Oral Roberts would be a reach.

Sorry, dude. Harvard’s a LONNGGGGGG SHOT. In fact, I doubt that with a 2390 on the SAT, he’d ever get in. Harvard only accepts perfect 2400s. Also, with those 10 points off, he might not even get into a state university. Tell him to get ready to go to a community college for two years.

^Too bad =(

Ludicolo… lolz. True dat.

hahaha I know exactly who this person is. Tell him not to worry; he has a great shot at Harvard

is your friend in this picture?

[Chemistry Olympiad Competition for High School Students](<a href=“American Chemical Society”>American Chemical Society)

yeah Harvard is a safety for him- I’m pretty sure he could get in without writing any essays- the professors at Harvard want the best students and your friend is likely the best U.S. high school student in chemistry this year.

“I’m pretty sure he could get in without writing any essays”

I’d be surprised.

He should apply to a few schools without writing essays, just to see what would happen.

Not writing any essays would lead any admissions officer to think he’s a highly intelligent dick, and would likely lead to a rejection.

Applying to any top 20 school without an Essay would be suicide, as they can afford rejecting outstanding applicants such as IChO gold medalists. Others, I’m not so sure about.

lmao brain bee? really? That name sounds so dorky.

Anyhow, as long as his college counselor doesn’t say he has personality issues or something, he’s in.
