My son is a Senior. He got a D in second semester AP US History but a 3 on the US History AP test (Spring 2014). He will be taking American Government in the Spring 2015. His school college counselor advised that he take the class again at national university online. However, there are not enough hours in the day for him to do that. We are all pretty stressed about this. These are his stats:

GPA 4.292 weighted (after the D)
SAT Scores, 2,280
SAT Subject Test: Math 2 - 800
SAT Subject Test: Physics - 730
Class Ranking: 28 out of 548 students (top 5.109%)

Awards/Honors

* Top Physics Student Award at the MITES program
* Top App Team Award at the MITES program
* 2014 1st Place in Science Olympiad California State Finals for Mag Lev

Notes:
The UC system's Quick Reference for Counselors Guide indicates that an AP score of 3 or above is sufficient to fulfill the US History requirement. However, we are concerned that the D will reflect negatively.

The US History teacher in this high school is a punitive teacher who is notorious for making the tests so difficult that 30% to 40% of the students get a C or less. Yet, over 90% pass the AP test with a 3 or higher. Clearly the grade does not reflect their knowledge.

When he received the MIT scholarship he had a C in the class (1st semester grade) but the grade deteriorated, rather than improved.

Anyhow, if any of you can give us some input we would greatly appreciate it. Perhaps someone with a similar situation?

Thank you!
