College Admission

Hi I am a senior who has already applied to SDSU, UCLA, UCSD, CSUSM, and CSULB. I am also a candidate to the USNA and the NROTC scholarship. I scored 1680 on my SAT and a 23 ACT (comp.) and got a 4/5 on the AP US History Exam. I am a dedicated volunteer at a local hospital (1 year and continuing) and a varsity wrestler. I have receive multiple awards from school/sports like student/athlete of the month x2, academic excellence x2, and academic leadership etc. I am also in the 10 top% of my class. My junior year I had the most AP classes I was able to take (3) and Honors Pre-Cal and got a 4.3 gpa. This year I have 4 AP classes and honors physics. I'm afraid i probably won't get accepted to any of these colleges because I am on the route to getting a D for the 1 semester course in AP GOVT. For the next semester I won't have any class because I took economy over the summer and got credit. Would this D, ruin my chances? I really don't want to go to a CC for a year or two, although it is economically smart. Could a 3-5 score on the AP GOVT Exam in May waiver that?

First of all, with that sat score you are only get into the cs’s. Not the uc’s or sdsu.

Alright, so what should I do about the D

The D doesnt matter right now with that sat score.

Not even for the csu’s??

+1 Wizard09

These are numbers: they are set things, and there’s is nothing you can do about them now… except that SAT and ACT. When did you take those? And if it wasn’t literally last month, then why didn’t you try again? You still can I think, as most schools accept tests later than applications (although I’m not highly educated on California schools). That would be the only number you could change. If you can, explain if there were extreme circumstances preventing a better grade in the AP course in an essay. Essays and recs would be the only thing you could strengthen. I am only taking APs this year, so I don’t know how much AP scores count versus the grade in the class

P.S. Good luck on your SA application and ROTC application as well (AFROTC scholarship applicant here :D)

Thanks for the advice and Good Luck too.

According to the CSU/UC matrix (see link) an AP test score can validate your D. AP scores unfortunately do not come out until July, so if you are accepted to a CSU or UC, you need to notify them of your D since you are a provisional admit and you are required to maintain a C for all your a-g courses Senior year. I would consult your guidance counselor immediately.
You do not state your CSU/UC GPA, but Wizard09 is right in that you have very little chance of acceptance at UCLA/UCSD with your current SAT/ACT. SDSU may be a problem also. My younger son was required to send in his Mid-year grades upon acceptance to SDSU last year, so that D will require an explanation if sent.

Thank you for the feedback, much appreciated!!
