I am currently a Junior and was wondering what my chance to get into UT Austin is. My GPA and class rank scare me the most, as I kind of (completely) destroyed my GPA sophomore year with an entire semester of Cs. I dropped about 400 ranks from my freshman year during that time, but have since “recovered” from that horrifying rank. I get anxious from the mere thought of an admissions staff member scanning my transcript and seeing a death defying sky dive in my sophomore averages. UT Dallas/UC Berkeley are the only other colleges on my radar and I’m definitely not getting into Berkeley now
Are you a Texas resident? If not, your chances are greatly reduced. Texas allows only 10 percent of its slots for OOS and international students. Only a 29 percent admit rate for OOS students.
Are you considering applying to business, engineering or computer science? Those majors are very competitive so your chances are tough there.
If you are really interested in UT, you need to get up to speed on the academic index/ personal achievement index system they use. Your PAI factors are not really addressed in your post.
If your ECs are solid you are a long shot at best for Computer Science or Chemical Engineering. Probably like 100-1 odds of getting in, but you never know. Not saying you shouldn’t apply to the majors you want to study, but those are the most competitive majors at UT.
I was accepted for OOS from New York for Electrical Engineering. My course load is not as heavy as yours, but my GPA is higher. My school does not rank, so nothing to compare there. My ACT is 35, while my SAT is 2260.
And then there’s a lot I don’t know about you, especially EC’s. I was very involved in robotics throughout high school, and my declared major expresses that. I also spent hundreds of hours in community service and participated in sports and other clubs.
You are in-state, and looking at your numbers, I REALLY DO THINK YOU HAVE A SHOT. My advice is to portray yourself in the best way possible, maybe focus on your hard work and your personal interests or talents.
And about your sophomore grades, like others have said, don’t worry too much. It shows you can handle failure and bounce back quite well, which will be very important in college. It might impact your financial aid, though. UT Austin can be stingy at times; I have no financial aid to speak of, so I cannot go to UT Austin because it’s not affordable to OOS.
