Chances at Business school or Petroleum Engineering

College Prep School only 120 kids in my class, Junior currently

-93 (Really a 92.78 or something) out of 100 GPA, All A’s and B’s, First Quartile

EC’s: 2 Time JV baseball MVP, Leadership award basketball freshman year, Model United nations twice, Globe trek trip, Ultimate Frisbee club one of the leaders, Young life, D-Groups, Volunteer work, summer job, Varsity golf

SAT: 1930 (1300 on math and reading), Going to take it again and hoping for a 2100/1400
ACT: 26, took it on a bad day and all so might re take it.

LONG POST AHEAD!!!

I will assume that you are not auto-admit or are OOS. I think you need to raise your test scores quite a bit for petroleum engineering and business, as they’re very competitive majors/schools (think at minimum 2100/33 one sitting). Your GPA seems good. Keep in mind that UT only cares about class rank, and not the GPA itself (unless you come from a non-ranking school; in that case, I believe they estimate a rank based on your GPA).*

Your EC’s are great! You seem very into athletics, and I’m pretty sure UT digs that. My only suggestion is to try doing something related to your intended major.

I feel that the main thing UT looks at for non-autos are rank, EC’s, essays, and letters of rec. Test scores don’t seem to be as important once it’s above 33/2100. My friends with better test scores and worse ranks didn’t get in.

For reference, I am an OOS student who applied for/was admitted to chemical engineering. I am ranked about 8/122 at a private, college prep school. 34 ACT, 2160 SAT one sitting. I founded a STEM club at my school, participated in robotics, varsity swimming, JSA, etc. 9 total APs by graduation. Didn’t get any major awards and don’t have any hooks.

*Anecdote: I transferred high schools in my freshman year. I only submitted my transcript from my second school (and it didn’t include my first high school’s grades) and was accepted without any mention of my previous school’s transcript. Basically, GPA/actual grades don’t matter out of the context of your rank.

@imthereal thanks for the reply! I am retaking the sat next fall and am going to work pretty hard this summer to bring it up. Does the overall score matter or do they just care about reading+math?

@Tgb2016‌ No problem, m8! If you look at the formula for admission to UT, you’ll find that they only consider writing and math from the SAT (no CR for some strange reason). For the ACT, they only consider composite for English and math.

Good luck on the SAT! I’m sure you’ll do great. In all honesty, I got a 2090 the first time I took the SAT. The second time it rose without me doing anything to study for it. I think taking it again helps a lot if you’re a nervous test taker like I am, as you know what to expect. Also, find which test is better fit for you! Personally, I took the ACT once without studying, and still did better comparatively on that than on either of my SATs (and I did study the first time around for the SAT).
