Chance of getting in off the waitlist?

Well, basically I got put on the waitlist for UT for this year which in a way ****es me off cause I know people who got in that really should not have. I'm 3 people outside the top 8% (guaranteed admission) at one of the best schools in one of the best school districts in the state, with a score of 2130 on my SATs and a GPA of just over 4.9 on a 6.0 scale. Just wondering what my chances of getting into UT off the waitlist are based on those factors or if I really have any chance at all. Also does anyone think the fact that UT does not really weigh how good your school district is is kind of messed up? I honestly believe I would do much better than half the people that were accepted automatically from school districts with a lower standard for excellence than my own.

from what i understand they do put district/school competitiveness into play.

i understand your frustration but the law is what it is. gives kids from schools who aren’t as high level as yours are a fighting chance based on how hard they worked to be better than the people in their school, not how they compare to people in better schools.

regardless, i’m fairly sure most waitlisted people who accept the offer do end up getting in, since a lot of people use UT as a backup school or get a better deal from a different school.

what school did you apply to? (like education, communication, business, etc) i’m sorry you didn’t get in, but that’s the way it is with state schools…I wish you the best and I hope you get in off the waitlist!!

I applied for Liberal Arts as my first choice and yeah, I am kind of venting and I realize why they do what they do, but I was just ****ed that i know of people in my own school not even in the top 20% with lower sat scores and a ton of regular classes who somehow got in and my 9 AP classes for this year and 8 for my last two years didn’t do anything. I don’t know I’m just pretty mad about it. Went from 139 my freshmen year up to 37 in rank now, and actually after the rankings we just got I’m right at the top 5% now.

ugh I’m sorry that is so unfair…I don’t know how it works but can you appeal their decision even if you’re on the waitlist? Hopefully you’ll get to go! do you have good ec’s, essays, etc? I know people with really good grades who didn’t get in but people like me (good but not stellar grades, great SAT, good/great ec’s, mix of AP and reg classes, etc) get in b/c even though they don’t have a 4.8 gpa, there are other criteria they look at…but if you have ec’s and all that too, I think you should get in. well at least you got on the waitlist, which shows they still want you! I know lots of people that got cap’d

so sorry you got waitlisted but explore your other options and have a plan B if you don’t get off the waitlist…but hopefully you’ll be at UT next year! good luck!!

A friend of mine was in a sort of similar situation in that she had come back to our school senior year after doing home schooling junior year and was therefore unranked when she applied to UT (when, in reality, she is auto admit). When rejected for her first choice major, she appealed the decision and sent in her midyear transcript (which caused them to take her new rank into account) and she got into McCombs. So my advice is to send in your midyear transcript with the better ranking ASAP and appeal the decision (I’m not exactly sure on how to begin the appeals process, so I would contact the admissions office and ask). Hope this helps, good luck!
