chance of getting into a class if there is only a waitlist of couple students

hi,
I don’t know which thread or forum to ask this question but if there are only a couple of students waitlisted, generally will the professor allow you to enroll in the class with authorization form or something like that

As far as I know, professors can’t do anything to bypass a waitlist for a student even if they want to. The cap of students in a class is determined by the registrar and usually has to do with the number of students you can fit in the lecture hall or classroom. They can’t let in extra students if there is no seat for them.

What class is it and how big is it? If it’s a big class, then you probably have a good chance of getting off the waitlist. If it’s a small class, you probably have a small chance of getting in. If it’s a lab class, you probably have a small chance of getting in because labs are in high demand.

There is some movement on the waitlist before the quarter, but there is often the most movement after the quarter starts (because that’s when students are most likely to drop). If you really want to get into the class, I would stay on the waitlist until the first couple of weeks of class to see what happens. Just make sure you also have a backup class in case you don’t get into the one you are waitlisted for.

i am trying to get into math 20c

If you’re #1 or #2 on the waitlist, I think you could probably get in, but there are obviously no guarantees. I see there are still open sections of MATH 20C–is it possible you could sign up for one of those if you need the class? If you don’t need to take the class next quarter, then there’s no real harm in staying on the waitlist to see if you get off of it. Just have a backup in mind if you never do. You can always take it again the following quarter. You could also keep an eye on the other open sections of MATH 20C, and switch to a different section if it looks like they are going to fill up or if it looks like you aren’t going to get into your section.
