Rising Senior
White, Male.
In-State
From East Lansing, Michigan; Moved here during summer 2010, lived in Newtown, Connecticut for ten years before that
Newtown High School-CT(pretty highly rated public high school) 9th-10th Grades
Lansing Catholic High School-MI- 11th-12th Grades
ACT: 34 (35-science, 34-math, 34-reading, 31-english)
i took the SAT subject tests in Biology and Math 1 and im awaiting my results
GPA-4.0 (on a 4.0 scale)
Class Rank-1st out of about 120. (at my old high school i was about 4th out of 400)

Here are my classes/grades:
Note: My school doesn't give A+'s, but my average percentile score in all classes for the past three years is about a 97%
Freshman Year
Honors Western Studies 1&2 (A)
Honors Geometry (A)(I took Algebra 1 in 8th grade and also got an A)
Honors French 2 (A)(took french 1 in middle school and also got an A)
Honors Biology (A)
Business Education 1&2 (A)
PE/Health 9th (A)
Honors English 1 (A)
Honors Asian Studies (A)

Sophomore Year
Honors Algebra 2 (A)
Honors English 2 (A)
Honors Chemistry (A)
Honors Physics (A)
PE/Health 10th (A)
Weight Training (A)
Honors French 3 (A)
Honors Sociology (A)

Then I switched schools and there were alot of complications. My old school had about 20 AP's, i was going to take around 11 over junior and senior year(there were no sophomore AP's), but my new school only has 6 AP's total. and only 1 is offered to juniors. Also they don't have honors world language courses at my new school and now I have to take theology as well.

Junior Year
AP Biology-(A, still awaiting test results, I am fairly confident I got a 4/5)
French 3(A-I was forced to retake this because the new school doesnt have french 5 or AP french, and I wanted to take french every year in high school)
Church History(A)
Christian Justice (A)
Honors US History(A)
Speech (A-a required freshman level course I had to take)
Honors British Literature (A)
Honors Trigonometry/Precalculus(A)

Senior Year Schedule
AP Calc (AB, all that's offered)
AP Gov
AP English Lit
Honors Philosophy and Theology
French 4
Intro to Art and Digital Photography(I had to take an art credit)

So out of the 6 AP's my school offers, one is Spanish which I don't have the option of taking, and the only one that I didn't take that I could have was AP Environmental. Science is my strongest interest and subject, even though I will not be able to take it senior year. I still have 4 full year science credits because sophomore year I doubled up.

I feel like my ECs are a little weak, but my counselor seems to think that U of M is a pretty safe bet for me.
On another note, do I have a chance at U of M honors? I know at the minimum you need a 32, but what do you need for a realistic shot?

I’m pretty sure you’d be paying out of state tuition if you’ve been here less than 3 years (but who knows, you might get scholarships?).
You seem like you have a good shot at Michigan, but I find it kind of weird how you don’t look like you’ve committed to anything for 4 years- all those different sports and teams and whatnot. Can you condense them on your application and make them all look like something continuous if they were?
U of M’s oos acceptance rates are pretty low and getting lower every year, so not to be mean, I would still hedge it as a reach. I got into some single digit acceptance programs, and still treated every school under a 75% acceptance rate as a reach and worked hard on getting accepted (just warning you never to get cocky).
You have a whole entire summer to do something awesome. I did a LOTTT with several different organizations my summer before senior year, none of them planned out before the summer really.
As for the honors college, don’t really care much about it. You can always get in later, do an honors in a certain concentration, write a thesis (and you have a 3.4? +) you’re in and honors doesn’t really play a huge difference in grad school acceptances (I’m pretty sure). So don’t base your decision on the honors college whatsoever. Hope the rest of the stuff helps!

I live instate and pay Michigan taxes. I am an instate student. To call u of m a reach for me is a huge insult. About 20 kids get into there every year from my school, and I have better grades/scores/class rigor than the 10 kids going from my school this year.

^ Then if you know you have a good shot, and your stats are better than many accepted students from your school, then why the **** are you asking us for your chances?

The biggest thing I wanted to know was if I stood a chance at the honors college, which I kind of doubt I do. I asked for regular as well because I didn’t want to sound arrogant(so much for that now).

Don’t doubt yourself. Looks like you do have a good chance at LSA honors. Your GPA is perfect, your course load strong, your 34 ACT is definately in the range. Concentrate on a strong essay and I like your chances. The only thing I’d worry about (which you can still do something about) is your EC’s outside of athletics.

Thank you wayneandgarth, I completely agree about the EC’s thing. They are kind of random, but I’m trying to make them more focused during senior year.

The honors thing is more of a crapshoot. They look at the essay, grades and test scores. I would think your chances of getting into honors is pretty good. I think honors college is a nice thing if you are interested in it but I wouldn’t make too much of an issue of it because there is an opportunity to switch into it if you do well and there isn’t a huge correlation between the honors concentration and honors college for freshman and sophomores.

Honors is mostly based off your essay. I got in with a lower GPA and ACT than you (although barely) OOS but I think my essay was pretty good.

Agreed - honors is mostly based (if not entirely) on the essay. Write an interesting, thoughtful essay that shows what you’re interested in. Besides that, your stats look pretty good! (and are definitely in the range of the honors). Plus, being in-state will also help. Good luck!

I got into honors without an essay. I might speculate it’s based more on numbers.

^They say they do offer some people honors admission without the essay but when that doesn’t happen, the essay is a huge part of it.

When you’re a particularly strong applicant (strong meaning numbers-based), they will automatically take you without an essay. But for the rest of us, even if you’re invited, you still need to write a pretty good, thoughtful essay to get into the program.

I had a 33/3.95ish (recalculated). It was good, but not extraordinary. I think OP has a good shot at honors.

I wouldn’t worry too much about the EC for Honors. You need ECs to get in to UM but with your GPA and ACT should have a good shot at getting in. For Honors just write a really good essay and do it shortly after you get admitted because they do fill up Honors before May 1. One really nice thing about Honors (my d is in LSA Honors) is living in South quad as a Freshmen.
