Chance please =)

Hey there! I recently applied to several schools and wondered if anyone could give me their opinion on my chances

Schools: MIT, Rice, Princeton, UT, Trinity, Yale, Cornell

SAT I: 760 Math, 660 Reading, 600 Writing (retaking Jan. predicted 2150+ from the practice blue book tests. It was a bad day)

SAT II: 800 Math II, 760 Chem, 670 History [ no review time =( ]

Rank: 15/510 (Valedictorian has a 107.5 weighted, but no life or EC's)

GPA: Average is 90.1 unweighted and 101.9 weighted (prolly 3.5ish UW)

AP Classes: Chem, Comp Sci (4,4) --- MacroEconomics, Govt. (?,?) this year

IB Classes: HL - Physics, Math, English, History SL- Bio, Art, Spanish

Hardest schedule in my school and probably one of the toughest in nation, atleast it should be. (9 classes IB/AP is not easy)

Math
Physics
English
History
Economics
Govt
Theory of Knowledge
Art
Spanish

EC's:

NHS - I tutor lots. About 3 hours weekly (11,12)
U.I.L Math, Team Chem, Comp Sci, Science - 5 hrs (9,10,11)
Schoolpaper Columnist - 1 hr (12)

Distinguished Achievement Program Certified - Basically four college creds, but I'm the only IB student that got this before graduation because of my AP's.

IB Diploma Candidate?

National Honor Society?

Recs - I assume very good. My history teacher has never written a rec before second semester, but she said she would make an exception for me (good?). I make her laugh a lot, participate frequently, etc. Also, she loved my architecture project (remade the coliseum modern style). My math teacher should be good since I catch on faster than any other student, but I make careless mistakes on tests (doh!) so I have about a 90. My english teacher explains my strength of character since she's my tough class, constant upward trend there (7 pts higher each 6 weeks).

Work Experience: I build/repair computers for people (often for free) with about 3-24 hours per month. (9,10,11,12)

Essays - I've been told: refreshing (blah), funny, fun, awsome, good, lacks voice but good, etc. So I assume above average (here's a snippet)

I remember the first time I gazed into the magical lens of my uncle’s telescope as a child. It was blurry, but after some adjustments and cleaning I could see the moon, and some stars much better than ever before. Though it seemed only like minutes, I spent a few hours just staring at the sky and playing with the wonderful instrument. The following day, I recall looking for every book I could find that dealt with stars, planets, and the universe. As I opened one book, I remember the first words I read: “Black Holes.” I was thinking, “How can a hole have color?” As I read further, I soaked in new and absurd ideas. The sentences “Light cannot escape it” and “it is infinitely dense and infinitely small,” sounded so preposterous that they kept me interested. Ever since then, my mind has been inexplicably drawn to seemingly impossible ideas and confusing topics.

(I love physics, astrophysics)

Hooks:

Uncle was Princeton Salutatorian of '79(does that count?)
Minority
I cook damn well?

Interviews:

Princeton - None =(

MIT - Excellent I bet. Spoke for three hours and enjoyed it all. My interviewer was a boxer so we talked about my martial arts and stuff.

Rice - Merp. It was ok. She was boring.

Yale - none?!?!?!

How is it that this person, Sephiroth, has a REDICULOUS track record filled with amazing academics, whereas I finished HS with lower than a 2.0 and only took 3 AP's and did chess club, mostly playing video games---- but we got the same SAT score? I'm smart I guess but high school didn't interest me; although obviously now I see that I shouldn't have said "meh" for 4 years. Anyway Seph just go to one of the top 20, it's all the same thing and sometimes it's better to be at the top of the lower ranked school then at the middle of the higher ranked school.

Uh, I just don't do well on tests that require me to focus for four hours. I have plenty of knowledge, but I lack that amount of concentration.

Seph is mad that I do nothing and I'm just as smart as him lol. I never even passed Algebra II, but I read alot and took latin for 4 years so that prob helped.

UT & Trinity - Likely

Although your class rank is good, all the rest are real reaches, even if you score 2150 on your SAT retake. However, the Hispanic/URM thing will probably work to your advantage as will some of your ECs. My guess is at least one of the five - MIT, Rice, Princeton, Yale, Cornell - will admit you. From your stats, my guess is that it will be Cornell. On the other hand, if you had a great interview at MIT, then maybe it'll be MIT. By the way, the fact that your uncle was Princeton salutorian will be no help to you at all. Legacies are either Mom or Dad, or, occaisionally, Grandma or Grandpa.

No i'm not mad I just thought it was a common explanation so I used Uh. As for being as smart as me, I don't know maybe you are and maybe you aren't. The SAT doesn't measure a thing other than your math knowledge is basic and you can answer their questions well.

"No. You are just not intelligent enough to do well on the SAT's. I hate when people make excuses:"

Does prepping for a month and getting a 200+ point increase mean that I became that much smarter? No. You are completely wrong, and yes there are such things as "Bad test takers." In my Math class I have to tutor the valedictorian of another school (my IB school is a combination of 3 H.S) because she can't understand half the material the night before an exam. On average I get 5 pts lower on tests than she does, but I know the material far better. I just do not focus well, especially in the morning.

yeah **** the SAT's

Nice job on the latin btw. I wanted to learn it but my school only has spanish so I self-taught. Got an 85 on the exam =( so I didn't get credit.

so.

besides the hijacking of my thread, anyone have an opinion?

Man, people that post responses in this thread are 1337!!

(the creative bump)

last bump,,,

I said last bump but.......

ok, you just had 5 bump posts in a row, just let the thread die! no one reads this thread anyways lol.

no offense, but you look only "ok" almost all of your schools are reaches for you, specially mit and pton. still, you might be able to convince the adcom you are unique. dont sweat it though, you are in the same boat as most of us. still i guess its better to be in a nicer boat, but at least you arent worse then us.

3 hour interview? damn i wish i could have that. but my interviewer's schedule was tight, so we only had 1.5hours...ugh.

hahaha..

I also applied to mit too. the interviewer also spent a lotta time talking about random stuff.

a d m i s s i o n c h a n c e s . c o m

it looks good for UT...austin right?

Yea. I can't be rejected there. 10% rule
