Chance the son of a celebrity?

I'm a half-Mexican male at a NE boarding school. And I'm not really the son of a celebrity.

Here are my stats:
Freshman (2.89): Art B-, English C+, Religion B-, Precalc A-, Latin II B-, Physics B+
Sophomore (3.33): AP BC Calc- A, Biology B, English A-, World History B+, Religion B, Latin III B
Junior (3.41): AP US History B (really hard class, our valedictorian got a B+), Latin IV B+, Honors Chem B+, AP Physics (C) B+, Multivariable Calc A-, American Lit A-
Senior (3.35 so far): AP Lit B+, AP Bio B (had to bring it up from a C+ >.<), AP Euro A-, AP Chem, AP Econ, Environmental Studies
independent study in math (topology)

EC's
Freshman: Concert Band (clarinet), Clarinet lessons, Debate Team, V Cross Country, V Nordic Skiing, JV Track
Sophomore: Choir (tenor), Debate Team, V Cross Country, managed JV Swimming while training for track, Winter musical, V Track, Voice lessons, piano lessons
Junior: Selective singing group (won't give the name cuz that'd give away my school), Choir, Debate Team, Voice Lessons, District Choir
Senior: same as last year, but i dropped debate team for just the first semester. and no district choir (wrestling interfered)

Misc.
I'm halfway through a CTY Linear Algebra course, and I might be able to finish it next term, but probably not.
I run. My 5K time is 16:40 on a grass/dirt course. My school doesn't really have a great distance running program, so my coach just let me do my own thing in XC. I'll stress this when I contact coaches, because I'm sure I could be a lot better with decent coaching.
I'm wrestling this winter.
I got some award for writing sophomore year (1 given out per grade) and one for math this year (1 per class).
I worked as a dishwasher for part of the summer.
I taught myself to play guitar by ear, so that takes up a lot of my time. I'm trying to find a way to show this to colleges, but a lot of them only look for compositions in classical and jazz.

I was put on probation winter of freshman year for fighting and winter of sophomore year for accumulated concerns (there's a lot more to the story, which I'll explain in the statement).

SAT: 2060, 700 M, 720 W, 640 CR (did this off of not a lot of sleep, will retake in January)
SAT II: Math II 800, Physics 700

Schools:
MIT
Carnegie Mellon
Brown (legacy)
U. Rochester
Harvey Mudd
Johns Hopkins
Northeastern
BU
RPI

Thanks in advance!

Your GPA really doesn’t match your SATs,Minority will help,Under-represented will help, but
MIT,JHU are reaches,the rest looks fine.Good Luck!

Holy crap! 16:40 WITHOUT a coach?! That’s ridiculous!

First off, your GPA isn’t going to help you at your schools. Not at all. But I think your demonstrated initiative will. Your standardized test scores are decent, considering that you didn’t study, but aren’t going to be stellar when compared to some of your competition at some of the school’s you’re applying to (MIT, Brown, Johns Hopkins), so hopefully you do well when you retake it in January. One problem I noticed is that you dropped some of your activities when a sport interfered. That doesn’t really reflect well upon you, unless you’re something like a state wrestling champion (which you very well may be, for all I know). Overall, I don’t see anything particularly brilliant in your stats (aside from that 16:40), so hopefully your essays are spectacular.

Well, after that dour assessment (I prefer to err on the side of caution), here’s what I think on a scale of 1-10, 10 being the highest:

MIT: 3
Carnegie Mellon: 5.5
Brown (legacy): 3.5
U. Rochester: 6.5
Harvey Mudd: 7
Johns Hopkins: 3.5
Northeastern: 5
BU: 6.5
RPI: 8.5

Merry Christmas!

If you haven’t yet succumbed to a paroxysm of rage after reading my unreasonably pessimistic post, please chance back!!
[Chance a scatterbrained, worried fool for schools with traditionally low admissions rates…](http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/827713-chance-aa-female-georgetown-american-howard-hamptons-uchicago-others.html)

I forgot to mention one thing: that 16:40 was junior year. This year, I got screwed over by the swine.

MIT - no

bump…

RPI & BU:easy acceptance

MIT/Brown/JHU-not a chance, enjoy your rejection

rochester/northeastern-possibly

probation for fighting is gonna screw you over BIG TIME. how did you do on AP tests? you seem like a smart kid who doesnt apply himself to his full potential. youll get in a great school for sure, but it wont be an IVY

Do colleges really put that much weight on freshman year?

Oh, and I got 4’s in US History and Physics E&M. I knew it would happen with US, but I just completely screwed up on Physics. Time constraints always screw me over on tests >.<

MIT and JHU are reachs and the others you should be good good luck:)
chance me

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/835179-should-friend-bother-apply.html</a></p>

your GPA is kinda low, but if you can get a really high SAT, then you should be okay. Becaus colleges are actually kinda okay with low GPAs and high SATs. Well, they obviously prefer that you have high GPA AND SATs, but if you had to have one lower than the other, they’d prefer higher SATs. So work on that in jan. and you’re good to go.
You’ve got a good chance at all those schools except for MIT. But then again, nobody does, so you’re fine.

so how high do my sats need to be?

I’m no optimist and do to the many indiscretions that you have exhibited in your report these are your chances as seen by me:

MIT- waste of money to even apply
Carnegie Mellon- low reach
Brown (legacy)- mid-high reach
U. Rochester- high match
Harvey Mudd- never heard of it so probably in
Johns Hopkins- high reach/don’t count on it
Northeastern- match
BU- match
RPI- match

Out of ten:

MIT- NO CHANCE
Carnegie Mellon- 3
Brown (legacy)- NO CHANCE
U. Rochester- 6
Harvey Mudd- 2
Johns Hopkins- 3
Northeastern- 6
BU- 6
RPI- 6

chance me

Brown (legacy) - (don’t know how much legacy helps) low reach
U. Rochester - match
Harvey Mudd - ?
Johns Hopkins - low reach
Northeastern - match
BU - in
RPI - ?

bump, anyone else?

MIT - high reach

U. Rochester - match
Harvey Mudd - don’t know enough to chance, sorry!
Johns Hopkins - reach
Northeastern - match

Good Luck!

Besides MIT you’re pretty much on target for all of them, make sure your essays and recommendations are killer cuz it can really give you an edge and push up your competitiveness for MIT

chance back please: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/839129-chances-please-d.html</a></p>
