Would I stand a chance at the ivies? HYPS or any of the direct medical programs?

Stanford is a maybe. . . HYP would be very difficult, but your test scores are excellent, as are you recs it looks like. Make sure you write a fantastic essay and I give you mid reach at Stanford and Princeton, high reach at Harvard and Yale. Please see my latest chance thread!

thanks Myname2!

My GPA is low because I spend too much time doing other things too, but the reason is not because of my ECs. That will not fly at an Ivy. Even if that is the reason, you still should have above a 4.0. They’ll want to know the extenuating circumstances and if you tell them “oh I was too busy” they’ll feel you obviously cannot handle the level of rigor and coursework at these schools.

You have a bunch of ec’s which is good. They appear very focused on biomedical sciences. But halfway through you went from neuroscience to pancreatic cancer. That’s a little fishy. Also, was this an all year thing or just over the summer? That way it would show more commitment.

The publication is good. They’ll actually want to know what you contributed to the paper. If you just stood by and ‘shadowed’ and the professor who loves you makes you fifth author, the ivy will find out and they’ll see that you contributed nothing to the research. If your first author, that’s another story. But be ready to explain yourself.

Make sure you have a killer essay that conveyed your passion. Your EC’s make up for your GPA without a doubt. Good luck

Also. Please don’t put ‘medical lectures attended’. That’s not that unique. Finally, if it really truly adds something to your app, keep the outside Rec to just 1. There is one from the CEO and another from the research guy. Find one that shows a different side of you if you want to have TWO extra recs.

Your chances are ok at best. But you need to figure out what makes you unique and put that in your essays. Otherwise don’t count on it. You have a lot of explaining to do to the adcoms in how your grades are what ythey are and what you actually contributed to your internecine.

*internships

My essays aren’t going to be about how busy I was obviously. I planned on explaining my grades with the problems in my family and how it reflected. My research was all continuous through the years thats how I got the publication because no one cares enough to just hand me a publication through shadowing. I had to work really hard for that. The fact that my EC’s make up for my grades is exciting also!

Thanks for the help guys!

Anybody else.

I’ll chance back? Anyone else have any thoughts? thanks!

I never said your ECs will make up or your grades because that isnt always the case. Low grades to an ivy mean rejection, regardless of ECs and level of success in them. Grades explain how you perform and show your level of work. You can’t say you were doing research in a lab in 9th grade and because of that your grades are low. IF you were accepted to an ivy, you’d be doing undergraduate research, taking tough classes, exams, being in clubs, committees, etc. You’ll be working harder than you ever have in college, and if you can’t handle it in HIGH SCHOOL??? There is no excuse, and it only gets more difficult.

A publication is good, but you have not even touched the surface of where you can take this opportunity.
I’m a junior who does science research also, but I’ve won competitions, am spending two months collaborating on a project at Oxford with a guy I’ve never met and have over 1500 hours in lab experience. AND my GPA is still above 4.0. And were low income, I help pay bills, etc. There are places you could go with this research, but shadowing for 20 hours is not it.

You have the summer use it wisely. Otherwise your chances are the same as everyone elses.

@Butters1 You don’t even know the difference between “you’re” and “your.” And you gave lectures at Harvard? I find that hard to believe. Don’t you think you’re being a little harsh here? Give it a rest. Yeah, your stats are pretty amazing, (IF you actually completed them) but that doesn’t mean you can go around disparaging other members because their stats aren’t perfect. I tried to stick up for you on one of your treads when everyone thought you were a ■■■■■ (are you sure you’re not?) What a waste of time that was. I’ve come to realise that you’re nothing short of a pretentious jerk living in a fantasy world.

I like your focus on specific sciences and the internships, but that GPA will do you in. I’d try for some lower privates and possibly think about your state flagship. The academic environment will be better for you and you may excel there.

chance me back?
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1161376-please-chance-top-publics-some-privates-will-chance-back.html

butters I wasn’t referring to you when I said my EC’s would make up for my GPA. I’m surprised that your low income; yet, can afford to fly around the world. Amazing, oh and 1500 hours in the lab? Do you sleep in the lab? Liar, you are a ■■■■■

If I applied to UPenn I would be in state. Would that be a help or no?

@Collegebound247 - Yes, that definitely helps. I saw that somewhere on their website but can’t remember where. It expounds upon that, I’ll look for it and get back at ya when I find it.

thanks! =]

Would I stand a chance there with my stats then?

@collegebound247 and @upennvetgirl727.

Im sorry guys. Especially to collegebound247. I’m not going to explain my financial situation, or my lack of grammar abilities. Thank you to upennvetgirl727 for sticking up for me earlier. If you want to see what happened to me, go to my chance me thread, bottom of third page.

I didn’t mean to disparage you and it’s my fault for being a jerk. I’ll probably never meet you guys but I wish you all the best in your quest for college and in life. Please forgive me and good luck.

You would stand a chance with your stats and you’ll be fine in state. Good luck!

@Collegebound247 - Heck yes, you definitely stand a chance. You need to remember that GPA isn’t the ONLY factor when considering your application. It’s all a package deal. For some, it’s the SATs that are weak, others, ecs; so on an so forth. For you it’s your GPA. But you definitely shine in the other areas! If it makes you feel any better, I know a guy that got into Harvard with a 1500 (out of 2400) because he was an active musician and excelled in the other areas, which you certainly do. I also know of someone who got into Penn with a 3.4 GPA. So it’s definitely not impossible. So show yourself with your talents and make it overt that you can make a difference on the campus, as well as the community with your specific talents. Good job, keep up the good work  Message me if you have any other questions, I’d love to talk!
