chance to UCSB

Hi,
I am a Clifornia Community College student.
Major:Mathematics
GPA:3.5
Major requirements and IGETC will be done before transfer.

I applied some UCs.
Is there any chance to get accepted by UCSB?

not if you spelled california wrong on your essay. your grammer is a little off in the post.... your best bet is if they dont look at your essay and focus on your gpa alone.

yeah ur in. UCSB accepts everyone w/ a 2.8 who have igetc done.

i dont know about that. science and eng. majors have to 3.5 to apply..... that was from the 2001 application so i'm sure the gpa is higher now. i have a 3.1, history major and am still really worried.

CCIsPrison: Science and Engr. have to have a 3.0 minimum to apply not 3.5

CCprison, check out this link. It says 2.8 will get u in.

<a href="http://www.smc.edu/transfer/services/guaranteed.htm#UCSD%5B/url%5D">http://www.smc.edu/transfer/services/guaranteed.htm#UCSD</a></p>

For some reason there's always a lot of misinformation passed around about the UC transfer admissions. As posted above, UCSB has a guaranteed transfer option for transfer students. The GPA required to be eligibile for the program is a 2.8, although not all majors are eligibile. You also need 60 untis, and completion of IGETC or a few general education classes as listed on the UCSB website. The biological sciences majors have additional requirements.

Assuming you meet all those requirements, and you ticked the checkbox labled "UCSB Transfer Admissions Agreement" on the UC Application, you're in automatically.

highschoolda: hey thanks for that link. I didn't know UCSB is only 2.8 minimum. I am going for electrical engineering. good to see that in the link. I might apply. Another question, don't know if u know. but what is a contract? If you sign it are you obligated to go to that school?

With any of the UC transfer applications, you are not obligated to go to the school if you sign a contract. Check the <a href="http://www.Assist.org%5B/url%5D">www.Assist.org</a> website for specific information about electrical engineering, since it looks like Engeneering majors have additional GPA requirements. I found this on the EE page:

*4. You complete all of the articulated core engineering courses listed below
with a GPA of at least 3.20; and you maintain a GPA of at least 3.20 on all UC
transferable course work through spring term prior to entrance. *

hmm...3.20 ain't that bad either

also when is a good time to sign a contract...I am in my first year's spring semester...I am applying this fall.

With UC Santa Barbara, there is no "contract" you have to sign beforehand like with the other UCs. When you apply, on the UC application, there's a part to checkmark that you're applying with the UCSB transfer agreement. That's all you have to do for UCSB. I just checked my UC application receipt, this is what it says:

Transfer Admissions Programs:
UCD Transfer Admission Agreement
UCSB Transfer Admission Agreement

As you can see, I also applied to UC Davis. UC Davis, on the other hand, has a contract that you sign. You sign the contract for UC Davis and other UCs (although I'm not sure about UCLA, I think they have a different system) in the fall semester of your 2nd year at a community college. For UC Davis, I had to go to my transfer counseler, get a form, and I had to write down all the classes I took so far and the classes I had in progress. The transfer counseler then takes the form, signs it, and mails it in to Davis.

so basically all you do is when you fill out ur application you jus check those boxes? You don't have to go to your transfer center and fill out any paperwork? right?

Yep, that's right, no paperwork. The Santa Monica College link that was posted above says this:

Submit a common UC application for Fall admission November 1-30. No special contract is necessary.

The Assist.org website says this:

**To qualify for the Fall 2005 UCSB Transfer Admission Agreement, you must:

Apply for admission to UCSB during the application filing period for fall
2005 (November 1-30, 2004). There is no additional paperwork to submit to
qualify for this agreement **

fei, yeah it seems like a good deal. I posted this b4 but there is also transfer agreement with UCSD, but that one requires singing on a contract (If ur CC is participating, it can be obtained in the counselors office), but to qualify u have to take a year of foreign language and other pain in the ass classes for my CC.

UCSD is a great school, but going to SB is good too.

BTW, this is my second semster too. Going to be applying to UCLA, UCSD, UCSB for bio major in Fall.

really? I don't my major (EE) would need foreign language classes...even if it's in the transfer agreement.

Yeah, I believe with the UCSD TAG, you have to complete two semesters of a foreign langauge (can't use high school classes either).

Fei, I am talking about UCSD TAG (transfer agreement Guarantee). Participating CC make their own contracts. My CC is dumb and made it stupid. U have to complete 4 chains of classes. One of them that is mandatory is FOreign langauge. HS Does not count.

AGain, every CC is different. MY CC is stupid b/c another requirement is do either a 2 semesters of Calculus or any other science. People that are history majors do not want to do it.

but wait... i didnt see that box... is it too late to check the box?

It was on the 2nd to last page on the application I believe. The page that asked you to fill in what scholarships you were eligible for. In the middle of the page, it had a list of all of the transfer admission programs for all the school (I believe the page also said "Check a maximum of 6".

I really don't think it matters if you checked it or not, because UCSB says that all you need to do is to sumbit the application, I never read that you had to check the box (I nearly missed it myself). I guess you can email UCSB and ask them just to make sure.

EDIT: I just checked my application receipt and the Transfer Agreement stuff was in this step:

Academic History (part four)

It's between the IGETC certification question, and the "Transferable Minimum" courses.

The GPA I had when I submitted my APP for Fall 2005 admission was 3.028 (i Just updated the application when they ask you for you fall of '04 grades).

Am I good to go then? I truly want to get in..

The only problem is, you know for the 60 unit requirement needed to be done prior to transfer.....well I overloaded myself for Spring 2005 (now), @ my JC...and I am taking 21 units to finish it.....

I haven't had a 'history' of taking this many units....but they said on the application explain WHY you have chosen to take this many units and WHAT enabled you to do so (changes in your life, etc).......I gave them a good explanation for that...

Nevertheless, I will have obtained the 60 units by the end of spring 2005....but the counselor at UCSB told me that if they see on your transcript that you have suddenly decided to take an overload amount of units, (not having a history of doing this...like you took 10-14 units always....) then they are going to be skeptical in admitting you?

Who can clarify this for me.

Because for GPA, I think I'm set, it's just the "way" or "method" I am approaching to complete the 60 units....
