Chance top tier? would be appreciated

Hey guys, I'm a Junior and I know "chances" are hard to tell, but I would like some insight. I know I'm not a super-student with awards out the wazzoo... Was hoping you all could give insight into which colleges I might have a chance at, whether or not to apply ED, any specific experiences with admissions/campus life at these schools, etc etc

Major: Want to go into engineering
Schools: Dream school would be MIT:)... also interested in CMU (CIT), Duke (Pratt), Cornell, JHU, with some safety schools

Gender: M
Race: White
State: MD

High School: private, reasonably prestigious (sends ~10 to Ivies per year)
Class size: ~350

SAT: 2200 (Math 800, CR 700, Writing 700) (will take again... practice tests avg 2300)
SAT IIs: 740 US History, Math 2/Biology (will take in june... expecting 780-800 math and mid 700s Bio)
AP's: APUSH 5, Comparative/Lang/Calc AB/Bio (projected 5s)
GPA:3.89 UW, 4.7W (All As, except one B in APUSH soph year)
Rank: top 10% (school doesnt report specific ranks)
Junior courseload: Most rigorous, 5 AP/IB's
Senior courseload: Most rigorous, 7 AP/IB's
Also, took a college engineering course @ state school during summer b4 junior year

Essays/Recs: Planning to spend an enormous amount of time on my essays... I am a decent writer, so I believe they will be good. Recs will be outstanding, I have a great relationship with all of my teachers

EC's (significant ones only):
-NHS 11/12 (looking like an officer senior year)
-Scholar program for high achieving students 9-12
-Student Ministry leadership involvement 9-12 (organizing numerous fundraisers, events, service projects, etc.)
--within this, multiple service trips to Camden, Charleston, and next year, El Salvador
-Leadership program at my school, invitation to apply only, accepts 3% total (11/12)
-Varsity wrestling
-JV Soccer (1 year)
- JV Lacrosse (1 year)
-Karate 10 years ---this is my big one, one of my greatest non-academic passions. Thousands of hours total time committed, active role in teaching, and two-time under-18 National Champion (hopefully a third time this summer)
-Planning to start a Political Awareness club, which I would be founder and president of
-Also, considering running for class president, still not sure:/

Honors/Awards:
Nothing too much in this category, I guess the national championships count?
National Merit Commended
Honor Roll all 4 years
St. Mary's Scholar

Work Experience:
-Academic tutoring for a few years
-Getting an internship this summer at a prestigious Engineering firm near where I live.. Really excited about it, lots of experiences to be had and shared on my app

U need to show leadership qualities to get into top tier schools, say leading a club or two.
I cant say anything bout MIT(well no one can, except the dean of admissions himself) and to I think u can get into Duke if u write good essays. Btw, u can try to google what specific colleges want in their applicants and write essay specific to that college.
You have good scores and good grades, but remember good schools want something outstanding to admit u( try to play state or nationals if u play sports or do a research in high school). Also, i personally tgunk that u r un JHU and CMU.
Hope that helps…

*think
*in

Sorry, my phone’s typing accuracy isn’t so gr8

I’m going to say high reach for MIT as it is for everyone. all the others I think are matches for you. Best of luck!

I think your in

Thank you for your opinions. I’ve heard MIT accepts applicants who have prestigious math/science awards, like olympiads and such. How much will not having these hurt my application?

Bump? Keep the responses coming, i really want to gauge where I am at

For the schools you listed, almost everyone is reaching. Especially MIT. I would say that you are likely to get in at the others though, including Cornell.

I would still recommend that you apply to MIT although you are slightly under-qualified. (lack of awards are your main weakness) As far as safeties go, Virginia Tech is a great school, not too challenging to get into (especially for you), and it has a great campus. Keep up the good work and remember that going to a top 10 school isn’t the only way to get a great education.

Helpful responses… I wish I started getting serious about colleges earlier. I just recently found out that math/science Olympiads and such existed, I go to a school that doesn’t offer or inform its students about stuff like that.

Also, my school sends many students to ivies every year, but we have not had a student accepted to MIT in over 10years, we don’t even have that many apply… Will this help or hurt my chances?

Bump 10char

It wont hurt your chances. You seem really competitive for the schools u mentioned. Class president could help your chances. SATs, GPA, ECs, and rigor look pretty good. That internship you mentioned will help your chances. You got matches at the schools but make sure you spend a lot of time on your essays and try doing them in advance as some schools release topics months before the application is due. If you represent yourself well in these essays, expect to get accepted to the schools u mentioned. Chance back?

I would hope you could get into MIT. You have a lot of stuff that most students don’t have. I have a friend that attends MIT.

Pretty decent student. Would Say MIT is a reach but you most definitely are good. Duke and cornell matches. CMU match and JHU low reach. If you are not sure about president, then don’t run just to boost app, it is somewhat important to some and requires the effort. Internships are great, personally i think it is better than a math olympiad(unless the kid is someone like Andrew Wiles). Check out Georgia Tech as a Safety.
