Chances of getting into UMD, Virginia Tech, NC State, Johns Hopkins, University of Deleware, Lehigh

I am currently a high school junior looking into civil/environmental engineering. I want to get into Virginia Tech the most and I'm almost sure that JHU will be a reach. Can someone help me figure out my chances?

Female, White, from Maryland

GPA (weighted): 4.43
Unweighted: 4.0
Class Rank: 2 out of 535

SAT: 1850 (660 M, 610 W, 590 CR) I've only taken it once, which was in my sophomore year with no prep. I definitely have to retake it again, at least twice.
ACT: I took it a couple weeks ago, waiting for my score. I'm hoping for low 30s.

APs taken: APUSH (4), AP Environmental Science (3, I had a terrible teacher)

Currently in AP Calc AB/BC, AP Biology, AP Human Geo, AP Lang, rest Honors

Plan to take AP Chem, AP Lit, and Linear Algebra (college class) next year. Most seniors do half schedules at my school.

Extra-Curriculars:
-Student Govt Association (9, 10)
-Class Treasurer (10, 11, hopefully 12)
-Field hockey (9, 10, 11: jv two years, varsity this year)
-Tennis (10, 11, maybe 12: varsity last year and to come)
-Swimming (9, varsity)
-Math club, we compete once a month with other schools (11, 12)
-Academic team (10, 11, 12 occasional competitions, appeared on quiz show "It's Academic" with only 2 other people)
-Key Club (10, 11, 12 community service club)
-National Honors Society (11, 12)

Essays: I'm not super at writing, but I think they will be alright.

Recs: Good, I get along with teachers well and I have a couple in mind that can write a superior recommendation.

Community Service: plenty. I volunteer whenever I get the chance, but do it on a regular basis once a week at a local library.

I just finished applying for an internship at the US Naval Academy relating to environmental studies and am waiting to hear back from them within the next week.

My only worry is my lack of physics classes, especially if I am planning on going into engineering. I am thinking about taking one at the community college next year, but I am not sure. I've never even taken an Honors or Intro course. Do you think this will have an impact on acception?

Let me know what any of you think. Is there any way for me to stand out more? Thanks!

Your grades and ECs are great. IMO if you get better SAT scores with the next test you are a candidate for all the schools you listed. Just remember that VA and NC are weird to out of state applicants. VA only fills 1/3 of a class with OOS and I’ve heard NC is more restrictive. You’ve got to learn to spell Delaware! I don’t know how restrictive they are but they’re soliciting my son in VA.

Why aren’t you taking Physics senior year? At our school it’s AP Chemistry sophomore year and AP Physics junior year. As I understand it Engineering schools look at the Physics grade as an indicator of how you are challenging yourself. Students who are trying to get into competitive colleges and especially prospective Engineering majors should not be taking half day schedules senior year. Since AP classes are theoretically college level courses you should be as challenged with your school’s AP Physics as you would be at a community college class.

Good luck with the internship. It sounds like a great opportunity!

The 660 in math is kind of low for an engineer at JHU and Vtech and UMD too, probably. Try and bring that up. Being a female going into engineering is a plus though. You have a decent chance at all those schools, but you’re right to say that JHU is a reach (only because of the SAT really). Especially since environmental is one of their best engineering programs.

@OspreyCV22 ha, well obviously I’m not too interested in Delaware if I can’t even spell Delaware. The only reason I am not taking Physics is because I have not taken an Honors course. With my school it’s hard to go into AP Physics without some background knowledge in it first, especially with the teacher (he is very unorganized and a hard grader). I will definitely keep it in mind though, as a replacement for AP Chem. I’ve actually had a conversation with my guidance counselor as to whether it’s better to take a half schedule with a college class or full schedule with APs. She actually advised us to call some of the colleges I’m interested and ask them; none of them seemed too opinionated on which they preferred. I guess it would look better either way if I took a full schedule. I really am trying not to be completely stressed out my senior year since my workload this year is stressful enough.

@JHU18 Yeah 660 is very low especially for my field. However, I got a 78 in the math section of the PSATs and I am almost certain it will go up to at least 700. Thanks!

I’d say that your grades are great as well as your EC’s, SATs are just a little low but that can be fixed. You have a great chance with Virginia Tech, Lehigh, UMD, NC State, and Delaware but Hopkins will be tough but not that far of a reach. I am also applying to Virginia Tech as my first choice and I’m very stressed out waiting for the decision! Good Luck! Also, can you please chance me back!

I got into Udel with about the same sat score and slightly lower gpa (but about same rigor), I have not yet heard from lehigh

It’s hard to say without a real (because you’re obviously not going to submit that one) SAT score but I’d say that all of those are matches except for JHU which is a low reach. This being said I’m assuming you’re getting your ACT score into the 2000s.
