Chance Your Boy From Jersey

Hey guys, I'm a rising senior from northern NJ, white male, lower middle class. I'm looking to major in history and do a pre-law track. My high school is over 3000 kids and is not highly regarded at all. Here's everything:

Schools (in order from reach to safety):
Brown
Cornell
UChicago
William and Mary
McGill
Tulane
GW
UCLA
Boston U
Fordham
American

(I'm not applying to all 11 lol, those are what I'm considering, will drop 2)

SATs: 2000/2400, 1300/1600
730 CR, 700 W, 570 M (I know the math sucks)

SAT IIs: World History 770, Literature 700

AP: US History-5 (School offers almost no APs)

UW GPA: 90/100 (3.5), W GPA: 93/100 (3.8)

Rank: 86/746

Honors courses taken throughout high school

Have received a B plus and A minus in politics courses taken at Georgetown, in dual enrollment program with Montclair State University for senior year.

ECs:

President of Keystone Club (formerly VP and Sergeant-at-Arms)
Captain of swim team, four years varsity
All-League and All-County Swimming
Boys State Delegate
local Boys and Girls Clubs Boy of the Year Award
Work experience as a lifeguard
I am now a DJ/ producer earning recognition in the northern NJ area.
Hundreds of hours of comm. service with Keystone Club

More ECs with stuff like that, if you want to know reply that.

I know my math SATs suck but that's what they are after 2 times and they're not going to go much higher. I don't plan on going into math, but law or archaeology as a backup. Lmk what you think about my chances, which school would be a fit, etc. Thanks!

anyone?..

bump…

For UCLA, just raise your GPA a bit in senior year, and it seems like you’re good. I know people who got in with 1800 SAT scores, so yours are great. Also, choose one of the less popular majors for LA, and that will also help your chances. Your stats are really impressive

I agree with your list- the first 3 are very big reaches with a 570 in math, and being from NJ makes things worse, since they get a huge # of apps from NJ. If you drop 2, it should probably be 2 of those. The middle 4 look like 50-50, and the last 3 look like pretty safe matches.

Have you visited these places? Where do you want to live for 4 years? Whatever you decide to do, apply to Fordham early action- you’ll hear early, non-binding. It takes the pressure off.

You sound like a person who likes city life- GW has ED 1 and 2, if you decide to use early decision to leverage your bets.

new jersey: only the strong survive

garden state pride for life! or at least until i move.

Correction: of the top 3, you could apply EA to Chicago, and you’ll hear by Jan. You could still ED 2 to GW. Chicago would still be a big reach, even ED.“Be strategic” is all I can say.

schmohawk, thanks for the advice, I’m planning on applying EA to Chicago. I would most likely drop Brown, maybe keep Cornell because you have to be in it to win it… Chicago I realize is a big reach, but I feel like the school’s liberal and looks for the “whole person”. If I can put together a great application, maybe I’ll have a chance. I’m anticipating going to McGill more than the other choices- from what I’ve been told I have a good shot at it.

My friends who went to McGill really liked it. Good Luck.
