Chance?

Hey guys,

I was just curious about how my chances are for getting into Carnegie Mellon.

How do my grades/ec's look?
- gpa shows noticeable improvement from freshman to junior year
Approximate GPA's:
- 9th: 3.75 (uw) / 4.20 (w)
- 10th: 3.85 (uw) / 4.65 (w)
- 11th: 3.92 (uw) / 4.85 (w)
- Sophomore year AP's: AP Physics B
- Junior year AP's: AP Physics C (EM & M), AP Calculus BC (with AB subscore), AP U.S. History, AP English Language, AP Chemistry, AP Environmental Science
- Senior year AP's (will take in Fall): AP Spanish, Ap Statistics, AP U.S. Government and Politics, AP Microeconomics, AP Physics (need class credit), AP English Literature

Most ap tests were 5's besides English... Always been strong in math & science... never great in English... lol.

EC:
- Currently an intern at CalTech. I help with research and the experiments.
- Tae Kwon Do for 11 years (instructor with 6 years of competition experience)
- 13 years violin; member of orchestras for 7 years
- Physics Bowl Captain
- Science Bowl Captain
- Rubik's Cube Club (~10 second 3x3 solve time)

How do my test scores look?
- SAT I (R/M/W): 640/790/620
(Only took once. Did not study. Planning to take September ACT)
- SAT II (All taken in one seating and in this order. Scores seem to have a decreasing trend... Got tired during the physics subject test...):
- Chemistry: 790
- Math IIC: 770
- Physics: 710

Didn't take any physics classes before taking tests. I took them as a self-assessment/our of curiosity. lol.

Thank you for any and all insight! Really appreciate it!

Pretty good, but definitely aim for a higher SAT / ACT score. What school @ CMU would you be applying to?

I plan to major in Electrical Engineering.

I think you have a good chance of getting into ECE (electrical and computer engineering) and should definitely apply. If you don’t get into ECE directly though, you may be still admitted to CIT (the college of engineering) and then transfer to ECE in your sophomore year provided that you get good grades as a freshman.

Thanks guys! I am planning on applying. Will I need to specify that I want to apply to ECE?

Yes, you will.

I want to point out something, though—if you read the admissions documents they make it sound like ECE is an ultraexclusive club within CIT and your only chance of getting in is to be admitted as a freshman.

In reality, getting into ECE as a normal CIT kid is as follows:

[ul]
[] register for the intro to ECE class (all CIT students have to take 2 intros and officially declare major by end of freshman year, I believe)
[] do well
[li] ask advisors about doing ECE instead[/li][/ul]

It also appears to be pretty easy to do this from MCS/SCS, so.

Thanks for the information.

But one quick question: What is CIT?
Living in southern California, when I hear CIT, the first thing that comes to mind is Caltech. haha.

Thanks!

CIT is Carnegie Institute of Technology - CMU’s engineering college.
