I kind of have a complicated story, because my GPA is super low with a 3.2/3.3 unweighted, 8 AP exams taken by the end of my senior year. Basically did well every year but sophomore year when I had a 2.2+missed 13 days of school because my dad was ill in the hospital. I understand that's not a valid reason but it is what it is. Right now I'm a junior with a 32 ACT (same superscored), so I have no idea really where I stand. That's a great ACT for UGA, but I know they really look hard at the GPA. I know UGA doesn't look at the type of school a student attends but I go to a school nationally ranked in the top 70 so there's that. Extracurricular activities are good, I know my counselor's going to try to write me a great recommendation, etc. So basically what I'm asking is can anyone explain to me what my chances are because I don't even think my counselor knows all that well given my weird circumstances. I honestly have no idea. I couldn't really see myself anywhere but UGA, but I know it does hurt that I'm out-of-state and UGA prefers in-state. Anyways, anything would help really--things to do right now, my chances, etc. Thanks a lot! I can answer any further questions just let me know.

honestly with your GPA I would say you’re a no-go for early, and a reach for regular admission. Although your ACT is already above average for UGA, see if you can improve it. Also consider taking more APs senior year. If your class rigor and test scores are substantially above the UGA average, you can offset your GPA. Write good essays and also make sure you’re absolutely loaded on extracurriculars. Overall, it’s a tough shot but you’re not totally out of luck.

So basically 8 AP’s + 32 ACT = 50/50 chance? I have good extracurriculars as well I’d say, a lot of volunteering, 2 sports, school newspaper, mock trial, yearbook. Don’t know about my essays yet but I’m sure they won’t be terrible.

I’m a high school teacher with access to a lot of kids’ grades and scores, and I have seen kids with lower GPAs than this get into UGA. They all have a compelling story. I agree with fins34 about your being a no-go for early, but I think if you can make a good case for yourself in your essays, they will give you a close look during RD.

I am not sure that UGA prefers in-state. I think they just prefer great candidates! Be enthusiastic about why you want to go there, what you love about the school, and what makes it such a good fit for you.

I hope your dad is much better. That’s a tough experience for a teenager.

You are well below average in terms of GPA. You may want to consider safeties. Your competition has also taken 8 AP courses with a high ACT score and kept a better GPA. While, you’re clearly a motivated student, admissions is still a contest. Good luck!
