Just got this email from FYI Carolina:

"Dear Carolina alumni, parents and friends:

During today's State of the University address, I announced my decision to relinquish the position of chancellor of this great University on June 30, 2008, the end of the fiscal year. I am not retiring. After a year's research leave, I will return with the most exalted title that Carolina confers professor. This timing gives the Board of Trustees the opportunity to complete a search for my successor and for this individual to begin by July 1, 2008.

I hope you share our pride on campus about Carolina's incredible roll. The quality of our first-year classes gets better every year. Support for faculty is stronger. Thanks to generous gifts from many of you, the Carolina First paign will end well over our $2 billion goal. Faculty research funding is rising. The General Assembly just created a $50 million fund for cancer research the equivalent of a $1 billion endowment. Universities across the country are modeling debt-free initiatives for deserving low-income students after the Carolina Covenant. A $2.1 billion building program made possible with North Carolinians' support for the Higher Education Bond Referendum is adding 6 million square feet to main campus when we are ultimately increasing green space and using innovative sustainability practices. Every part of the University is positioned for excellence.

I am grateful for the remarkable support the University receives from our alumni, parents and friends. Susan and I have come to love Carolina with every fiber of our being over these past seven years. We understand the strong pull that Chapel Hill has on the hearts of students and their families that lasts a lifetime. I look forward to working with the Carolina community this year to keep UNC's momentum strong. My pledge is to bring the same level of passion, energy and commitment in my last year as I did in my first year as chancellor.

Sincerely,
