The other thing is that there is a new dean without enough of a record to figure out. These last two years have been later.

I have been lurking on this thread for a few days. DD just got a FedEx ltr offering the Chancellor’s scholarship, a week after the interview. I am posting just to provide information to the many anxious parents and students. Good luck to all.

For what it is worth, we are OOS but otherwise no hook.

Kana, fantastic news! Will you daughter accept? You must be so excited that she was offered the Chancellor’s.

Congrats to your D!!! Makes me nervous that we scheduled S’s interview toward the end so he could do it over spring break. Hope we didn’t shoot ourselves in the foot! We just assumed they wouldn’t make any decisions until all the interviews were completed. :/

Kana, what is your D’s intended major?

If you read back over some past Chancellors’ threads, you’ll notice that this is standard M.O. for the committee. It does make one very nervous, but in past years, they have awarded the scholarship to someone who interviewed towards the very end of the process. I guess they aren’t aware of the fact that we discuss this on CC. ;)

This is why I’m so confused about their process. Why do they make some offers early, and why do they wait until near the end of April to offer others?

Kana, does your daughter have to accept or reject the scholarship within a certain period of time?

I’m very confused. The threads I read from the past couple years had people waiting to hear their interview results until the end of April. I never saw that some got earlier notification. I really hope I didn’t misguide him. He’s limited in the number of days he can miss from school for college visits, etc., so we were trying to maximize them by using spring break.

Likely engineering. They gave until may 1 to decide but it is likely that she will accept well before then, perhaps in 2-3 days. She is likely to be admiitted (with no aid) to some top 20 schools but it does not make sense to pay $250k for a brand name. We also were blown away by the opportunities and the people at Pitt. Overall, we are thrilled with how things turned out.

MommyDearest, relax! It will be okay! If they really want him, they will still offer him the scholarship. One year, someone didn’t interview until close to the middle of April, and was still offered the scholarship. I’m sure he has a very good chance. If it makes you feel any better, maybe call and see if you can move his interview up.

Kana, agreed. Pitt is just as good, if not better, than any brand college. We are amazed at the opportunities our daughter, who really wanted to go to an Ivy, has had at Pitt. If you want more details, PM me.

I will say that one thing about Pitt that we as parents really love, is their flexibility in helping students achieve their individual goals.

The ironic thing is when our older D was starting to research colleges, I kept overlooking Pitt because I thought it was a private school and we wouldn’t be able to afford it. It was CC that educated me about the value of their university, and I was subsequently able to talk D into applying. The rest is history.

Kana, I’m really excited for you and your daughter. My daughter is in the engineering school, so if you have any specific questions, again PM me and I will ask her. She is home on break this week.

Kana, just realized you might not be able to PM me since you don’t have the required 15 posts yet. But I think I can PM you. So if you would like the info, just reply something like “Flyme, PM me” and I will give you the scoop. If you don’t want any additional info, no problem.

Flyme, would appreciate any info and pointers. Thanks.

Congrats Kana!!!

Re D’s interview, she reports it was very informal and laid back. Met with a current student, the dean, and 2 counselors (this was the formal interview) for about an hour. Said discussion was wide ranging and explored numerous interests and activities. Toward the end of the interview, she was given strong hints of good news to come. She also got a book as a gift – it reflected her interests and aspirations --clearly, they had put some thought into it. No activities for parents - my spouse just hung around for the entire time. They also had a campus tour.

Apologies if this data has already been posted. This is just to get my posts up to 15 so that I can PM Flyme!

D informed me about an hour ago that she is ready to pull the trigger on this one. She did get into Wash U., her first choice until recently, on Friday. But, dinged for all of the scholarships there. Thus, the economics became just too compelling.

Congrats Kana! I’m sure your daughter will love Pitt and a free ride is too good of an offer to pass up The engineering school is great! DS has loved his time there!

My letter came today!
My interview for the scholarship was last Friday and I got the letter telling me that I was accepted to be a Chancellor’s Scholar today!! I was super excited!!! Hopefully, I can be of help to anyone who is still in the process of interviews!

The first half-hour is spent with a University Honors student. I really liked my student and we shared common interests (Biochem Major, Research, Parties) so it went really well.

The next hour was spent with the Dean. When I interviewed, the Dean was absent, so I talked with a former physics professor instead. It was very laid back and somewhat fun, which I did not expect. I absolutely abhor Physics, but we spoke about the Higgs boson, the invention of the internet, and his sons.

Afterwards, it was the main interview. I was really relaxed, and the interview was meant to be a “flowing discussion.” My interviewers went over almost everything I was passionate about: my six year old brother, my Forensics team, my bass clarinet, etc. At one point, I was basically delivering a rant on how North Korea is like a puppy in the middle of a kennel. I had fun during that interview One of my interviewers was texting during the interview so I thought I’d pretty much lost any hopes of getting the scholarship, but apparently not! They did give me a book pertaining to my major, which was very sweet.

I’m still in utter shock. The letter came much faster than I expected, particularly because my interviewers made it very clear the decisions would come around April 11th. Well, at least my waiting game is over Good luck to future interviewees!

Congratulations, Smiley! I’m assuming you are accepting based on your enthusiasm. You sound like you will be a great asset to Pitt!

Hi FlyMe … I haven’t posted in this thread but I was wondering if you could give me some insight. I PM’d you. While my son didn’t get the Chancellor’s scholarship, he did get full tuition. So it is becoming a very tough decision for us. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. He is also looking at engineering.

Palves, sent you a PM.

Congrats, Smiley!
