Chances at a few schools - AU, LU, Emory, SUNY, Hofstra, Fordham!!

Hey all! I'm a second semester freshman at a small liberal arts school near Atlanta, GA. I grew up and graduated from high school in PA...I moved 900 miles away to come to this school, but in the end, it's not as politically active as I'd hoped. I plan on going into journalism and political science, and work in print journalism, hopefully in D.C.

My first choice is American University, but I'm also looking at Lehigh University, Fordham University, Emory University, Hofstra, and SUNY-Albany...CHANCE ME!!! ALSO, if you have any suggestions of where else I should consider for my particular interests, I'd love to hear.

P.S. I'm applying to these schools particularly because most of them allow me to wait until after my 2nd semester to apply, which means I wouldn't have to show my HS grades, and solely my college ones -- Obviously this means they'd see my 4.0, etc.

HS GPA --
2.98 (LOW, I know, but my junior and senior year were consistently at 3.8+ every quarter for those two years...My freshman/sophomore year of HS dragged me down, but quite frankly I don't think colleges are looking at that)

** Interned at a MAJOR, national publishing company in my city; I was selected among college applicants. I was the youngest intern in the company's history. I wrote bylines, researched stories, published them online, and worked alongside the online editor in chief.
** Volunteered/Founded a huge library undertaking in my hometown, an educational video drive for children. I contacted educational groups in D.C. and NYC and got donations from people in my community. The project started with 25 videos, but has received over 700+ videos to date. I worked doing everything from PR work to organizing, etc.
** Volunteered with Meals On Wheels.
** I became EXTREMELY politically active in high school and organized the first Students for [candidate -- prefer not to say here] in the school's history. It was totally grassroots and over 200 people came to meetings. We were featured on the front page of the city newspaper the day of our PA primary, and I was interviewed several times on issues surrounding the campaigns.
** Other info --> met Maya Angelou because I won a national poetry contest, I had works published in literary anthologies, etc.

hmmm, this is tough...if your applying for soph. standing (fall 09), your hs record will usually be of greater importance than your one semester of college

your hs gpa is certainly low...im not sure how much weight colleges will put on your hs gpa vs. your performance in hs broken down by year/quarter...it looks like you are a pretty motivated applicant...i would perhaps bring attention to your rising gpa in hs and into college somewhere in your application...all in all, even with a hs gpa below 3.0, i think you will have a pretty good shot at most of the schools that you listed, emory will be the trickiest however...just make sure your passion shows through in your application...surprised you didnt put gwu on your list

Hey, thanks for your reply! Yes, I am definitely highlighting my "upward trend" GPA, and if anything, I think it works to my advantage -- gaining maturity, getting to know what I am really passionate about, etc. The first two years were rocky due to some family separation issues, but I don't plan on bringing that into my application.

On another note, I didn't add GWU to the list because I'm not sure of it's 'metro campus' feel...I like American's traditional campus. But I'm thinking of applying to GW more and more. However, I think that'd be the TOUGHEST to get into. Hrm.

bump -- anyone else?

I agree with dufflebagjesus, you seem to have a pretty good shot at all of them (emory being the most diffucult). I'm surprised you didn't add Georgetown University to your list. If you transfer as a junior, assuming you keep up with your academics and add more college Ec's, not only will they look at your HS stats less, they will hold much more weight on your college transcript / Ec's.

gl

I want to get into American University more than any of them, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed and working hard. Anyone have any experience with their admissions? I know they're competitive, but not so bad that they've got the claws out...I feel like GWU and Georgetown are just going to shoot me down, but I'm not sure yet.

bumping again :)

you already got two good answers, no need to bump your thread a second time when other people want answers in their threads as well. please do not respond to this for the sake of bumping your thread again.
