Chances at AMAZING schools plus advice!!

Hello! I've been reading these threads for a while, and was wondering what my chances might be for some awesome schools. For my major, I'm absolutely in love with Business, and am looking into schools with good Business or Econ programs. If these schools also have good English programs, that's a plus, because I'm strongly considering a double major of Business (or Econ) and English. So, chance me if you feel like it : )

So, anything I need to work on? I'm not sure if I should retake the SAT/ACT to up the scores a bit, especially considering the awful 700 math. Will I need to retake the SAT I, if my Math SAT II is 800? (For some reason I'm better at advanced math than basic math!). If you have any other suggested schools, please comment! Thanks for your help in advance!

how rigor is your course load?
mind if you list it? =)

UPenn - probably. Wharton - maybe, but likely.
MIT - possibly, but knowing people who have been accepted/rejected this year, it's a crapshoot. Generally they may want more math, but honestly I can't tell you.
Columbia - yes.
NYU - yes.
Duke - yes.
Princeton - reach.
Yale - reach.
Northwestern - yes.
Claremont - yes.
Stanford - yes.
Rice - yes.
ND - yes.

You seem very dedicated to debate, which is of course a plus. You may also want to raise your CR/M scores slightly, although judging from your 800 Math 2, EC's and awards there is little need for 800's all around. Seeing your curriculum would also help. Overall you have strong chances, imho.

Thanks for the input! My curriculum is quite rigorous: all honors courses with advanced material. Our school curriculum is based upon liberal arts, so the 2 courses that read honors ___ literature and philosophy, and honors ___ history are actually one 2 hour course (called Humane Letters) that combines history and literature and focuses on analysis, discussion, and writing skills. We basically read tons of books every year in that class, and debate certain view points during class time. We also have to write alot of essays...

12th Grade:

what do you mean you're a self-employed internet journalist? like a blogger? or something else? that sounds cool.

Yep, like a blogger. But I make money to pay for debate trips and stuff, so it is pretty cool!!

Hmm, so by listing your curriculum you are saying that you haven't taken any AP classes? I'm pretty sure that most of the colleges you listed like for you to take APs. Of course, if your school didn't offer any APs, then that would be a different story.

Yeah, my school just offers Honors, but believe me, it's still extremely rigorous. Our counselor sends out a "school profile" so the schools we apply to don't freak out. Like I said, it's based on the Humanities, as we have a liberal arts curriculum that focuses on analysis of the great works. Oh, and most of our teachers also have PHDs or Masters, which is unusual (i think) for a public school.

UPenn - reach Wharton- big reach
MIT - reach
Columbia - reach
NYU - safety
Duke - reach.
Princeton - big reach.
Yale - big reach.
Northwestern - high match.
Claremont - match.
Stanford - big reach.
Rice - high match.
ND - high match

I would highly recommend considering the Ross School of Business at Michigan as another match school and I agree that Wharton is a big reach for you (but then again it is for alot of people). I'd say getting that SAT I score in math up should be a priority for now...many applicants going for those top scores will have 800s.

Really though, what it's going to come down to is how much your essays make you stand out.

bump... bump...

And when I said top scores I of course mean top schools XD

i'm really not providing any assistance here, but i think it's very odd your school schedules chemistry for senior year. physics II before chem?! chemistry will be a breeze..

yes, it should be... our school is -- like i said-- very unique. they wanted to put the physics I and physics II back to back in grades 11 and 12, so that makes sense, i guess... any more opinions? even if it's just for one school, like wharton or princeton or yale, that'd help tremendously!!!

i would seriously look at mit more closely if you want to go there for business. it's a very math/science oriented school, and although it has sloan, the culture of the school doesn't promote studies outside of that. in the most social dorm, baker, students who major in econ are called the baker bombers because econ is the easiest major. humanities majors are sometimes looked down upon because physics/math is considered much harder. while i love mit and think its an amazing school, i wouldn't recommend going there for what you are interested you.

Yeah... i've heard that about MIT. That's one of the reason's I'm still trying to see if it's a fit for me.

Wharton/Princeton/Yale (not surprisngly) are big reaches for me? Are they ever anything but big reaches? I guess if you're a recruited URM athlete, they're not, but for normal students like me they must always be reaches, right?

i don't know much about colelge admissions but i personally think you're setting extremely high standards. being valedictorian of a class of 55 isn't exactly impressive, unless your High School has a track record of sending students to these schools. you have incredible stats, but most of the schools you listed are either reaches or major reaches. consider applying to uMich, Washington University in St. Louis, Carnegie Mellon, Wake Forrest, University of North Carolina and Boston College

Well being the valedictorian of a class of 55 isn't normally impressive, unless everyone else at your school is incredibly intelligent, and your school has an impressive college prep curriculum ; ). I don't think all of the colleges on my list are extremely high reaches. Claremont McKenna, NYU, Rice, ND, Northwestern, and U Chicago I should be able to get into. The others may be reaches, but I believe with my stats and essays I should be ok. I have thought about CMU, and WUSTL, but BC, Wake Forest, and UNC don't seem right for me.

well, i did say most of your college choices, but you should be able to get into those schools you listed above, the only reach there might be University of Chicago, but the colleges i listed are all quality colleges. you should apply to CMU at least as a safety in case you dont get into the other colelges you apply to
