Chances at any UC/some privates for a below 3.0 student? :\

Applying to:
Every UC
USC
University of San Diego
Santa Clara University

UC GPA = 2.50
Total (9-12) = 2.556

I also received 2 D's in Freshman year, and 1 in Junior year. I retook them all in summer school (2 A's, 1 B). Maybe it'll show them that I care about my GPA?

SAT I: (1920)
CR: 610
Math: 640
Writing: 670

SAT II:
MathIIC: 620
Literature: 640

Current courses:
AP Statistics
Contemporary Literature
AP Economics/AP Government
Marketing

Extracurriculars:
Boy Scouts of America for 6 years. Currently working on my Eagle project at my high school. Easily 150+ hours of community service (though some aren't officially documented).

Member of the Track and Field team in 9/10/12th grade. Ever since 8th grade, I've been training year round, 16 hours a week with a independent track club. Stopped in Junior year because of grades.

Monthly volunteering at the Tech Museum of San Jose since 10th grade. 90+ hours.

Working at a supermarket since 7/2007. Quitting soon.

I guess you can call me a "late bloomer". I've had minor ADD all my life (been taking meds for the past year). Should I bother mentioning this somewhere in my application?

For UC's, I'm mainly relying on meeting examination requirements. Right now my UC score is 385. Hopefully, I can break 410 when I retake both SAT's. For privates, I'm hoping to show major improvement this semester. I'm really keeping up in all my classes, so it shouldn't be a big problem.

On a positive note, I feel very confident in my college essays. Both my writing tutor (taught English for 20 years, asked by College Board to grade essays) and older brother (UCLA grad) said it's really unique but strong. Still doesn't raise my morale too much :

You need a 3.0 minimum to even be considered normally.

Honestly, try for the cal states/community colleges. They're not as bad a cc'ers make em seem.

Just got my October SAT scores.

2020
680 CR
680 Math
660 Writing

anyone? :

The minimum UC GPA to apply is 3.0 I think.

You could always transfer.

I'd say all the UCs are reaches. (I think the 3.0 requirement is for scholarships, not for admission, though I could be wrong.) Your GPA is holding you back.

I know transferring is an option, and I know I should easily have a high enough GPA to hopefully transfer to UCLA, but I really don't want to spend 2 years at a CC. I'd be missing the whole freshman experience IMO.

Anyone have any suggestions if I should mention my ADD or not? I know not to use it as an excuse, but I feel that it would explain some inconsistencies (like my abysmal GPA but decent SAT's).

Last bump

kyledavid80, we probably need someone to confirm this. But I think for the regular admission path, you need a 3.0 uc gpa to even apply...

You do need a 3.0 just to apply, but there are other ways in case you don't. There is Eligibility through examination or something like that, but I think you have to get a 2100 or a 2200 or something. If you do, they will let you apply without meeting the 3.0 req.

there's this UC calculator on the UC site that can take in your score and GPA and they'll tell you if you're eligible to apply.

any more opinions?

You need a 3.0 GPA just to be even considered for application. It's just wasted money if you apply - Once they see your GPA you're already denied. There are no special cases for this.

"Anyone have any suggestions if I should mention my ADD or not? I know not to use it as an excuse, but I feel that it would explain some inconsistencies (like my abysmal GPA but decent SAT's). "

....how would that explain your "inconsistencies"?

I don't think you should go that route with the ADD, because these days just about 1 outta every 10 kids have ADD (that's not a real stat, just example), so considering that it's 1/10, quite a few of those manage it and are doing good in school. Just my take and it's null unless you are given special circumstances in everything else.

Heh, I was diagnosed with ADD/ADHD and never took meds. I actually think it'd helped....

hey look at that plastic bag

plastic bag
plastic bag
plastic bag
plastic bag

oops sorry... ADD.

This is my first year taking APs (3 total), so going from a 2.33 Junior GPA to a 3.75-4.00 Senior GPA with AP's seems pretty fishy/slacker-ish. So that's why I want to mention that Senior year was when I was diagnosed/started taking medication.

I know UC's don't see 1st semester senior grades in the admissions process, so I guess the "improvement" is mainly for the privates.

I've seen the UC admission statistics and I know <3.00 GPA's can make it in. The majority of those may be athletes, but I might as well try :

your uc gpa needs to be above 3.0

dude i'm in denial just like you. lol!
