Chances at any UC's and any other recommended ones! Thanks!

Hey everyone! I wanted to say first of all, that my GPA is not very great at all, and I'm hoping to make that up by scoring well on the ACT that I will be taking in September. I brushed 10th grade off completely, which hurt my GPA and I didn't try at all and received a horrible GPA for 10th grade. Then this year, I actually started trying and I got a 4.2 just for 11th grade. However, my GPA is still not high enough to get into very many schools I believe, but please chance me, thanks! :)

Looking at these colleges:

UC Berkeley
UCLA
UCSD
UC Irvine
UCSB
UCSC
UC Riverside
UC Merced
UC Davis
SDSU
USC

Also, please recommend any other colleges that you think that I should apply to based on my current information. Also, if I get a high ACT score, do you think that I could make up for my not so great GPA? And, with what ACT score do you think I might be able to even have a chance at Berkeley or UCLA?

Thank you very much for taking the time to read this, I hope you will be able to chance me accordingly! :) :) :)

I think you're a solid match for the UCs below SD. Realize that 90 plus percent of those accepted at the top UCs are well under top 10% of class.

UC Berkeley: 99% of incoming class in top 10% of high school class.
UCLA: 97% of incoming class in top 10% of high school class.
UCSD: 99% of incoming class in top 10% of high school class.

^^^ Haha, yes I've noticed that, however, I was hoping that if I get a high ACT score, I might have a chance at possibly UCSD. I understand it's extremely hard to get into upper UC's with low GPA's, as the schools are highly selective. Any other thoughts about where I might get in or what other schools I should apply to? Thanks a lot for the replies so far by the way! :)

my cousin's to-be roommate at UCLA got accepted with a 3.9 UW (never took honors or AP until senior yr-took 2), SAT I: 800M, 470R, 690W, i dont know about his SAT IIs, never did any ECs or sports. he got his education in hong kong and came to the US his Freshman year. just make sure your personal statement is awesome, and i think u can get in

UC Berkeley--Reach
UCLA--Reach
UCSD--Slight Reach to Reach
UC Irvine--Slight Reach
UCSB--Slight Reach
UCSC--Match
UC Riverside--Match
UC Merced--Safety
UC Davis--Slight Reach
SDSU--Match to Slight Reach
USC--Reach

As a first-time college attendee from your family, you get a few extra points which is why (along with your pretty good ECs for a UC applicant), you have some chances for UCI/UCSB/UCD. In reality, your best choice is probably going to be UCSC (right here in my backyard). It's a beautiful school on the hillside overlooking the beach surrounded by redwoods.

Best of success.

P.S. You would need about a 33 to 34 ACT to have good chances at UC Berkeley and UCLA.

Thanks a lot for all the replies so far! I was wondering, if I'm planning on majoring in Computer Science or Engineering, what are the best schools for that, which I can get into? I heard that Cal Poly has a good computer science department, and so does UCI. I also heard Berkeley has a great engineering department as well. What UC's and/or other schools would be appropriate for my major which I might be able to get into? Thanks again.

Engineering:

Besides UC Berkeley, which you mentioned:

UCLA/UCSB/UCD/Cal Poly SLO all are good

I don't know much about UCI's school or UCSC's school

Computer Science:

UCI is the best (besides UC Berkeley), then UCSD, then Cal Poly SLO, and UCLA. UCSC has a good school for this also.

Thanks! Do you think that I would be able to make it into Cal Poly? I'm not aware of their standards.

Cal Poly SLO is around the same difficulty to get into as UCI/UCSB/UCD. I believe it would be somewhere around a match-slight reach for you. UC Berkeley, UCLA, UCSD are going to be very difficult for you, even if you raise your SAT or ACT level up, because of your GPA. Average admits into UCSD have a 4.06 UC GPA, UCLA a 4.14 UC GPA, and UC Berkeley a 4.17 UC GPA. UCI/UCSB/UCD have averages UC GPA's for admits around 3.89-3.92. SAT averages for admits for UCSD UCLA and UC Berkeley are from 1945-2040. For UCI/UCSB/UCD average admits SAT average is around 1830-1850. Cal Poly's stats are very similar to UCI/UCSB/UCD.

Thanks a lot for the comments so far! Now, I now this is probably a huge reach, but I was looking into out of state colleges and I really liked Washington University in St. Louis. Is there any chance for me there? haha... also anyone else have any other opinions/comments about my chances? Thanks a lot, again.

Anyone else? Please and thank you! :)

have hope! you are in-state, and UC recruits a lot of freshmen members.
except for LA, Berkeley, SD, and USC, I think you have a good chance.
If your rec and essay are good, it'll definitely help

Washington University at St. Louis from any state is actually more difficult to get into than UC Berkeley or UCLA are as a California resident.

Thanks again for all the replies. Sorry, I haven't been checking this thread lately, but I have more questions :) . What do you think I can do to try and make myself become a match at UC Irvine? Also, I heard Berkeley will pretty much reject most people with GPA's under a 4.0. Is this true as well? And one more big question: What out of state colleges do you think I should apply to? I'm looking for some pretty good colleges that will be a slight reach/high match for me out of state. Also, say I got a 30-32 on my ACT, what out of state colleges would be a slight reach/high-match then? Thanks a lot!

Anyone? Thanks.

Hello??????

bump! (10 char.)

I forget the exact statistics, but Berkeley included some when they rejected me in April. This is from memory, correct me if I'm wrong:

Of 25,000 applicants, over half had 4.0+ GPA.

They accepted ~10,000 for ~5,000 spots.

Do the math.

Yeah, I kind of figured that. Thanks for the reply. Also, I'm still looking for a reply to my earlier question:

What out of state colleges do you think I should apply to? I'm looking for some pretty good colleges that will be a slight reach/high match for me out of state. Also, say I got a 30-32 on my ACT, what out of state colleges would be a slight reach/high-match then? Thanks a lot!
