I posted this in the other forum as well
Hey all, it’s my first time posting and since you guys seem pretty good at evaluating others, I decided to take a shot. Right now my top choice is Brandeis University, and I think I find out from them at the end of the month. Think I have a chance?
GPA- 3.6 (rank within top 11% of a class of 550+ kids at a very good public school) I guess I’m Asian American because my parents are from India and I was born here, although I’ve had people tell me that Indian is not Asian…shrugs*
SAT I- 1330 700 V 630 M SAT IIs- Writing 710, Spanish 600, US History 630
AP exams: US His-4, and 3s for English and Spanish Language
Awards: AP scholar, honor roll stuff, Spanish Prize Exam, UConn excellence in writing award, other writing awards,
Activities: crew (3 yrs), running a radio station that broadcasts news to blind people (4 yrs, that’s my volunteerwork), editor of school newspaper for 2 years (senior, manager, and business) job at the hospital this past summer, producer for journalism program, treasurer of Culture club, teaching Sunday School at the local temple. I’ve been doing all these activities for at least 3 years.
*also good essay, recs, and a good alumni interview

You should have a shot, but I think it may depend on the other applicants from your school - if Brandeis is hot at your school, it could be a problem. MA, CT and NJ are pretty competitive. I am fortunate (LOL) to be from Nowhere, Ohio. Good luck - it's only a month now!

You have a good shot I think. The SAT IIs are a little on the edge, and your class rank might hurt you a bit, but all in all you are well rounded and your ECs fit in well with the kind of activist and socially-conscious culture that Brandeis tries to foster.
"a radio station that broadcasts news to blind people"-- why would blind people need a radio station geared specifically towards them?
Don't think that I'm trying to be an insolent little jerk here, I'm genuinely curious/confused.

yep, i agree with the above posters.
while your gpa and SAT may be a bit low, your EC's should balance them. i think you've got a strong application.

good luck!

Thanks all you made me feel a lot better about my chances! To the person who was wondering about the radio station for blind (and handicapped) people...Blind people cannot read the newspaper, so there is a station that has volunteers read three different local news papers over the radio. There's a segment for sports that runs on certain days, I do the local news, and people also read advertisements for sales at places like Stop and Shop and Sears and Wal Mart and such.

hmm, if 150 or so people view this post, why doesn't anyone comment?
Come on people tell me if I have a shot!

Only a Brandeis adcom can give you a proper assessment of your chances, so just sit back, relax, and hold on for another month. Good luck!

actually, I just got an e-mail saying that we should get decisions in about two weeks ... and to call if we haven't received a decision by March 28th. So I guess the count down begins ...

I have to say, though, that regular decisions are coming out early than I anticipated.

I didn't get that email!!!! offended haha just kidding, they have my application, so I don't know why they didn't email me....uh oh...

Well it's nothing special really ... and it's some sort of e-mail list they have going on ... b/c at the bottom it says click to unsubscribe. ::shrugs::

I just like the e-mail b/c they gave a date for decisions... and I'm going to hold them to that date. (lol)
