I'm entering as a freshman at a top competitive day school in Texas. Throughout my academic career I have never made a B. Last year I was high honors and straight A's with excellence in humanities. As far as extracurriculars go I'm average. I do journalism, drama, a fair amount of community service, and I ran on the track and cross country teams and played basketball(I won't be in upper school.) I also swim and am starting tennis this fall. My standardized test scores are high except for vocab and I'm seeing a tutor about it. I can rock an interview and I know how to get good letters of recommendation. I'm a good writer and can kill an admissions essay. So that said, what are my chances of admission in the top boarding schools (andover, Exeter, Groton, st Paul's, Deerfield, etc.)?

You are from a relatively underrepresented state (I am speaking in terms of the NY/CT/MA usual flood of admissions here), and you sound like someone who would be involved, so those both work in your favor. However, what might be seen as a question is that you are ready to leave your new school, a top competitive day school in TX, before starting. Be ready to answer that this fall when you interview and also when you ask your teachers for recs.

Tenth grade admissions pools include a lot of private school grads whose schools end after ninth. That will be your competition–three season athletes who have been stacked with ninth grade leadership opportunities, test prep and interviewing coaching (both individual and group) in readiness for this application process. Usually there are fewer spots for tenth and the schools you mentioned likely want kids who can “jump right in” and adjust quickly. Try to convey that in the interview. Good luck!!!

You have as good of a chance as anybody, but what makes you unique from other hundreds of applicants is what the admissions officers want to know.

Best of luck,
