Hello, I am currently a high school senior applying to colleges and I was just wondering if I even have a chance at Cal Poly Pomona?
I want to be either an English or Journalism Major
My Sat score is 1000 Math 470 Reading/Writing 530
GPA 3.05
Thank you!
Please anybody
I am a transfer student to CPP studying Aerospace Engineering. As long as your major is not impacted at CPP, your chances increase dramatically. I would say, by about thirty percent or more
By the way, it is an engineering school. It is known for engineering. I feel as in this school, other majors are not as popular as engineering.
Thank you, so would you not recommend this school for my intended major?
@student2742, and @COD40203 please check the list of majors: https://www.cpp.edu/~class/departments.shtml
It is a good state school and I’m sure the non-engineering graduates are surprised that their diplomas now read “school of engineering” on their diplomas. >:)
California Polytechnic University at Pomona is not just an engineering school. It does have a focus on STEM majors, but you can check the rest of the non-STEM majors who receive degrees that are not engineering.
Apply there if you wish. It is a good school.
I’d recommend applying to Sonoma too, as well as the hutchins program within.
Cal Poly Pomona admits by eligibility index (EI) and major.
(CSU GPA x 800) + (SAT Math+CR)
Your EI calculate out to 3440 which is low for CPP.
You want to be in the 3700-3800 range for the best chances. If you are local you might have a slightly better chance.
Definitely worth an application but consider some other Cal States like Sonoma State as suggested by @MYOS1634 along with San Francisco State, San Jose State and Northridge. You might want to add a non-impacted campus to your list for a safety such as Channel Islands, Dominguez Hills, Stanislaus, Bakersfield.
CSULB also have journalism program, my friend’s son is in the program and really enjoy the hands on experience working on school paper and news reporting. CPP is a great school with every major focused on hands on experience not just limited to engineering. Companies like to hire CPP students regardless of major.
What are my son’s chances on getting in Cal polly with a 3.3 gpa and a 1000 SAT for mechanical engineering? Also applied to Fullerton,Riverside, long Beach and San Diego?
@Mototkid123: All the Cal States admit by major and CSU GPA. Based on posted stats his Eligibility index is (3.3x800) + (1000) which equals 3640. His eligibility index is low for all the Cal states on your list.
For SDSU, an EI of 4100 is competitive
For CSULB, an EI of 3900 is competitive
For CSUF and CPP, an EI of 3800 is competitive.
Unless you are local for CSUF or CPP, all are going to be Reach schools.
ME is impacted at all the campuses so to be competitive, applicants need to meet higher standards.
For UCR, Freshman Admits for UC GPA of 3.0-3.39:
UCR: 25%
Your son has selected a very competitive major with below average stats. If he has some compelling essays and outstanding EC’s, there might be a chance at UCR. So what are his safeties?
It is hard to say for aerospace engineering what the cutoff would be as admission is based on number of applicants. Last year my son knew some high school students that had a 3.8 and could not get into mechanical engineering at Pomona. It may not be a bad idea if he really wants to go there to start off with a clean slate and go to community college first.
The important question to ask if he could make it through the program if his GPA is a low B. Not that grades are everything, but they are pretty good indicator of success in a tough engineering program. Engineering at Pomona is brutal and if he is not strong in advanced math he won’t make it.
My son came out of high school with a GPA of 4.25 and 40 community college units. He was super strong in math. He spent a year after high school in community college and transferred into Pomona with a community college GPA of 3.83. The engineering program at CPP is making him work really hard to get good grades. My son always thought he could do better than Pomona until he got there. He found that the students in the engineering program are all brilliant and that it was more intense than he thought it was going to be.
Some schools admit incoming freshmen as pre-engineering which is a good move. That way if you don’t make it you can transition into another major with minimal unit waste. Cal Poly Pomona doesn’t do that and they have you take basic engineering coursework early. Unfortunately, if you flunk out of the advanced math like so many do then you have all those classes that do not carry over to another major.
I don’t really understand all of this at all. We are local to CPP we live in Upland CA. We don’t have a safety school! She he have also applied to junior college?
@Motokid123: ME is impacted at all of the CSU campuses that he applied meaning that there are more qualified applicants than spots. My niece was local to CPP and applied last year for Biotechnology that is also impacted and was waitlisted and then rejected. Being local helps since you are given priority but you still have to meet minimum CPP requirements for an impacted major so there are no guarantees. There are some CSU’s still accepting applications, so he might want add these to his list (Bakersfield, Fresno, Dominguez Hills, Monterey Bay, Humboldt and LA)

When selecting schools to apply, it is always important to check each school’s website for required course work/test scores etc… along with checking the Common Dataset to see where the applicants stats fall to gauge their chances.
A local community college could be his backup, so I would try and add these Cal States to the list if possible.
CPP does consider alternate majors, so did he list one?
Thank you so much. I did look up all of these things and from what I saw he had a chance. Bu t I guess we will just hope and prey! Do u think we need to register for a junior college now like Chaffey or MT Sac?
@Motokid123: It cannot no hurt to have the enrollment process completed for either Mt Sac or Chaffey. Both schools will probably ask for a English and/or Math placement test prior to enrollment so all this can be completed in case he has no choices come Spring.
Ok great thank you so much:)
There’s nothing wrong with hoping and praying but, I’d strongly suggest you also apply take a proactive next step or two. Freshman courses at most big CCs fill up quickly so, people who commit late wind up with fewer units than they’d like. If that is plan b - understand what the timelines are so you can keep your momentum. I’d also apply to the CSUs that are still admitting. UNR Boise State, NAU and many other WUE schools are still taking aps. (WUE schools offer significant tuition discounts to applicants from other western states - in many cases, making the tuition comparable to a CSU).
