your gpa isnt very good, but you have taken 10 ap classes so you are obviously challenging yourself. ur sat and ecs are both exceptional. i dont think gpa is THAT important. i have high gpa and low-medium sat 1s (you know what fine, they are just low for columbia) and i was deferred. i wish i had those scores. i think ull get in. all u have to do now is bite ur nails till march/april/whatever.

columbia loves debaters (though not as much as harvard does). policy > LD, but still, TOC is good stuff (as is USAMO obviously). what's the qual system for that like?

If your essay was decent you stand a great shot.

Denzera, when you say policy > than LD are you talking about this from a colleges perspective or your own biased viewpoint?

just my own biased viewpoint, but i imagine it has a little traction elsewhere. policy debate requires much more research, it has more spreading and requires faster thinking on a wider range of subjects, it has more speeches in a round, two-person teams rather than solo, and more hard-hitting, reality-driven resolutions each year. the people who are nationally serious about policy get into HYP at rates that would astound you. I don't think i can say the same for LD, which was seemingly sneered at (although at least a dozen kids at my high school, Lexington HS in MA, did LD there, compared to a 40-strong policy team).

Now, many schools may not have a very strong, nationally competitive policy program. I think strong commitment and national recognition in LD is way more intellectual passion, drive, and success than most applicants to a Columbia would show. Hell, the only debate team worth anything at columbia is the parliamentary team, and they're practically a drinking team with a debate problem. I'm quite confident that an invite to TOCs in LD and a national ranking is pretty freaking special and will be viewed as such.

oh no, they DO exist, the parliamentary team is even pretty good, but a lot of the clubs at columbia could be described as "a drinking club with a ____ problem"

Skraylor - so basically, Columbia is.... just like every college? :)

Teams wax and wane in their seriousness, it depends on the captains any given year. The ultimate frisbee team used to be a pot team with a frisbee problem, and they got serious my freshman and sophomore year and contended for nationals.
