Volunteering:

Research:
This summer, I will be conducting research at USC for 6 weeks.

THe biggest thing with me is I go to a really really intense public boarding school in SC that 's on a list w/ like stuyvesant and thomas jefferson for newsweek's "public elites". problem w/ going there is my grades have dipped.. no longer straight A's. This is definitely my biggest concern. I will also be taking 4-5 AP's in senior year w/ 3-4 above AP courses.

no rank either

Forget the BN scholarship. Those are mainly used to recruit for Putnam and undergrad national science competitions, that is, truly brilliant kids who've gone to the IMO or int'l Chemistry olympiad.

You have a shot at Duke though, mainly because you're local. Your scores are OK but that 4 on AP Stat forebodes that, even though you've got 8 APs senior year, adcoms might predict that you'll only score 4s on each. A good strategy is to pick easier APs junior year and get 5's, and then load yourself with 10 more APs senior year-- gives off the impression that you'll get 5's on all 10 given your previous record.

I would apply. But know that being Chinese and having played piano your whole life will not help, try to break out of that typical mold. Show that in your essays.

does it make any difference if i took stats as a sophomore? And does debate help at all? IDK if that's too asian but I have a couple of state awards adn I went ot NFL nationals. and I'm only a junior so I'll have 8 AP's going into senior year.

and yeah i def. understand what you mean about the piano thing.

What high school do you go to?

sc governor's school for science and math.

u have no chance at all, u suck

im kidding, btw that dude is wrong about the bn scholarship... its pretty much all based on leadership and service... u know niti? she got it last year, and i think this girl from southside got some trinity scholarship. it pretty much depends on the pool of people we apply with from nc and sc... but yea you got a lot of solid leadership

Duke: Should Get in
BN Scholarship:Um.. good luck

Um you do have a shot, but nothing seems to "stand out" about you. You seem like a smart, involved, chinese male. but what else?

and you've only taken one AP test. That might hurt, because you're going to be competing with other people who have taken many more and have gotten 5s on all of them.

I think you have a shot at duke but not at the scholarship.

most people take more than 1 as sophomores? i don't know why this AP test thing is such a big deal. i'm taking 7 as a junior, and 5 more as a senior.

"Forget the BN scholarship. Those are mainly used to recruit for Putnam and undergrad national science competitions, that is, truly brilliant kids who've gone to the IMO or int'l Chemistry olympiad."

what the heck?! well considering that it's only for students from NC and SC only one (1) student fits that qualification--and he's from NC btw

besides, the scholarship website says: "provides ten full-tuition scholarships, as well as summer enrichment programs, to enrolling students from North and South Carolina who demonstrate outstanding leadership ability, community involvement, and academic promise."

Nowhere in there does it even mention Math/Science awards, let alone IMO or even USAMO

Anyways, CNI are you doing SPRI? B/c that's what I did last summer too and I enjoyed it :)

yeah i'm doing spri, I actually go to GSSM

Debate is considered very asian just for your information. Everybody has a chance but the only thing that counts is what the admissions officers think of you.

I think you have a good chance at getting into Duke. I don't quite agree with college59's opinion about debate though, its not stereotypically an Asian EC because at my school, we have around 30 people in debate and there are about 3-4 Asians (or perhaps I misconstrued due to geographical differences).

By the way, I am Asian and I'm very curious to know, what EC's aren't stereotypically Asian?

I think the discussion about "stereotypically Asian" activities is kind of absurd--especially when someone has to ask what EC's aren't stereotypically Asian. Do what interests you and do it well, and you'll be fine.

The original poster has done some great things that everyone seems to be overlooking--founded Beta Club? Editor of yearbook? Captain of XC and track? Student Council? Debate? Seems to be bright and well-rounded. The research will lend some depth and he's certainly in the running for merit money.

Thanks for all the input

to xguane: While I also don't believe in "stereotypiallly asian" activities, i guess a few would be piano, math team, science, tennis.

Team sports (i.e. not tennis, golf, etc.) and community service are presumably the major two non-racialized EC's. Successful scientific research is probably a racialized EC, but rare enough that it's a positive anyway.

Never underestimate the racialization of an admissions process.

Actually, your piano will help you at Duke. Duke is very interested in serious classical musicians. Not necessarily to become music majors, but because they've discovered that accomplished musicians make excellent students. Your stats are impressive. Good luck!

FYI, the AB duke is the scholarship which is used to recruit the tip top scholars/Rhodes types. BN Duke is for more "human" people who are active in the community, etc.
