I am afraid I may be too optimistic, but to say the least Wyoming valedictorians are exceedingly rare. I believe Duke & Middlebury are maybes, with you in at everywhere else. I think you are in line with the schools you applied to - some guarantees, some stretching it a tad. It's too bad you didn't get that math score up...a 700+ would do wonders for your application. But overall, good shot - and good luck!

Realistically, I'd say forget Duke and Middlebury. Your SATs aren't strong enough and your ECs aren't unique enough. BC is a reach, and to get into W&M from out of state you usually need near Ivy stats, so I don't think you'll get in there. Wellesley is also a reach. On the other hand, I think you have a good shot at the rest of the schools you listed.

Anyone else?

Anyone at all??

ru kidding, girl ur in at Duke, how many kids at Duke do you think are from the whole state of Wyoming. IN fact, how many applicants do they get from Wyoming. A 1340 is def good enough. From my own school, a feeder to duke, a girl with a 1220 and low low average got into Duke (URM). Last year and this year, 2 girls got in for fencing with 1200-1250 SAT scores and low averages.

No worries. I think you have a strong chance at Duke. Your academic record is stellar as far as GPA, SAT/SAT II/ACT scores, and class rank. You never know however, with those "top notch" schools. The rest of your list you're in.

It's hard to believe I have that good of a shot at Duke....

Duke - 50%
Middlebury - 70%
Wellesley - 70%
BC - 90%

You are in everywhere else.

AllieJ -

I'm afraid Bball and Edint are being way too optimistic. The kids he said got in with low SATs had very big hooks. One was a URM, the other two, it looks like, were recruited athletes. You are white kid with M+V 100 points below the median M+V for Duke admits, you have grades and ECs that are, by Duke's standards, just average. You're not a legacy. You have no major hooks. You're not a recruited athlete. That you are from Wyoming just may give you a leg up. Maybe. But I wouldn't count on it. It's highly unikely you'll get in.

Also, I reiterate that Middlebury is a big reach for you. The median M+V for admits there is higher than Duke's. Heck, even the 25th percentile M+V at Middlebury is higher than yours. It's highly unlikely that you will be accepted there.

I stand by my original assessment. But, the other schools that you've applied to - Mt. Holyoke, GW, Martha Washington, American, Northeastern, BU, and BC - are all good schools. You chose well, and you'll have a fine time and get a great education at any one of them.

Duke and Middlebury- Reaches
BC, Wellesley and William and Mary- Slight reaches
Everywhere else- Definately in

You'll get into all of those schools because you're probably the only applicant from your state applying and they want all states to be represented in each graduating class. It's much harder to come along a wyoming applicant that has ball park stats (even though your scores are a little below average) than it is to come along a URM or good athelete. HOWEVER, you're not originally from Wyoming, so using your geography as a tip-factor or hook probably won't work for you. THey want a "native" born from each state because obviously Wyoming and Washington are as different as night and day and you may not share Wyoming's "way of life" and cultural upbringings as your peers do. Just an honest standpoint... If it were a move from South Dakota to Wyoming, that would be a different story.

I'm very surprised everyone keeps saying you're "definitely in" at William and Mary. I'd say it's easily one of the most difficult schools on your list. W&M is a public school and, despite the fact a fairly large portion are OOS, your application is still average. Being from Wyoming (rather than VA) will hurt your app, although it may give you a boost over the other OOS applicants. Your stats, although quite good, are average even for in-state.

Duke, like many universities, tends to be a bit numbers-driven. Feel free to disagree, but I've found that LACs (like Middlebury) are more likely to look at the application holistically, so I'd put your chances at Middlebury as a little better than at Duke. Unfortunately, Duke only counts alumni as your parents or siblings, so that won't help you either. On the other hand, your application is rather good overall, and if you wrote strong essays, it's likely you'll find big packages from most of your colleges in May. Focus on keeping your grades up and having fun; there's no point in worrying about your chances now. :)

"Being from Wyoming (rather than VA) will hurt your app, "

Even though this app isn't a Wyoming native, he/she is probably one of the only, if not the only, perosn who's applying from Wyoming. They want all states represented. I think that he/she'll get in.
