Just wondering if I could get in/should apply and have any chances for my 8th grade 2011/2012 academic year:

-Straight A's and A+'s
-Hispanic/African-American
-95%+ percentile on state testing
-Gifted and Talented Program
-Piano is my extra-curricular activity
-I don't play any sports currently but I plan on starting soccer again(I played soccer in Kindergarten and 1st grade)

My mom wants me to go to dana hall school but I want to go to groton, but either one is great, which ones better and do I have a good chance of getting into both of them?
Thanks! Also I recieved some info in the mail from Groton school and it looks pretty preppy, is that just the dress code or are all the kids there extremely preppy?

Groton is tougher to get into than Dana Hall but both are great schools. The question I’d ask is how you feel about the idea of a single-sex school ( for those unacquainted with the school, Dana Hall is all girls). Have you talked to your mom about why she likes Dana? Have you looked at a wider range of schools? You do seem like a reasonable candidate for Groton. Would your mom consider allowing you to apply to a few schools then make the final decision based on revisits?

Single-sex school’s are fine with me really, its just that i’m caught between how many great extracurriculars Dana Hall School has, but also how academically rigorous Groton School is(I like to have a good challenge). I’m going to visit both and apply to both so if I don’t get into Groton, I can go to Dana Hall, but im going to work hard to get into Groton.

… and yes i’ve considered a wider range of schools, but its just most don’t accept applicants for grade 8, alot do, but I don’t really like them. if you know any good ones it would be great if you could suggest some to me!

I’m pretty sure Dana doesn’t allow girls to board until 9th grade. If you’re close enough to attend as an 8th grade day student you’ll also have a ton of other great day school options, a few of which have boarding beginning in 9th grade. Milton Academy would be one such school. 8th isn’t a regular intake year for Milton but if you liked the school it might be worth it to apply.

While most top boarding schools seek ethnic and socioeconomic diversity, Groton and Dana Hall are not as “mixed” as others. Both are especially “preppy,” both have long histories of intense exclusivity based on wealth, blueness of blood and social connections. They are both top notch schools where you would receive a top notch education. But if you’re one of those kids who is especially sensitive to and turned off by peers who are sheltered and entitled, you may want to add other options to the list of schools that you visit/consider. Again, Dana Hall and Groton offer world class high school experiences, just a tad more socially elite than you might expect.

Yeah I looked at Milton and they don’t accept applicants for 8th grade, and I am not exactly in the range of dana hall to be able to attend as a day student, but my family would move closer.

Dana Hall is actually a great amazing boarding school I’m going there when I’m finish with 8th grade they have everything a girl can dream of. But Groton is an good very nice school you have boys there you can met and it will be easy to get a boyfriend and it have educational school. So you have a hard choice but my option would be Dana hall but you should visit both school to see which one fits you.
