Chances at Honor College Acceptance?

My DD is applying to Pitt Swanson and she is in the top 5 to 6% of her class and her SAT scores are 760M, 710CR and 760 CR. She has a lot of extracurriculars but is president of both Model UN and Mock Trial. Her unweighted GPA is about a 95%.

Thanks in advance.

The Honors College does not “accept” students into its program, per se. They strive to be inclusive to students who are interested in challenging themselves and participating in honors courses. That said, with certain scores students will be automatically eligible to enroll in honors courses at Pitt. The information can be found on the Honors College website: http://www.honorscollege.pitt.edu/course-eligibility

It looks like based on the 1400+ SAT combined with the high class ranking/GPA that she should be auto-UHC eligible. This means that she doesn’t need to ask permission to sign up for UHC classes or housing, she can simply choose to do so right away. Also, that should allow her to be eligible for more scholarships which come from UHC.

But as @hailtopitt1787 said, even if she is not auto-UHC eligible, nothing is stopping her from doing any UHC-related activity (class, club, or housing). She simply has to ask for permission first.

Thanks. Come to think of it I knew that you could ask permission to take honors classes. I was thinking more of the housing and being automatically considered for the Honors Housing.

@smokinact, Students are not required to take honors classes in order to be part of the honors Living Learning Community. The Honors College site has a lot of information about housing: http://www.honorscollege.pitt.edu/housing/first-year-honors-housing

Here is a quote from their FAQ regarding who may participate in honors housing:

“You don’t even need to be “Honors Course Eligible” (that is, be an entering First-Year student with at least SAT combined math and critical reading scores of 1400 or above, or a 32 composite ACT score, and be in the top 5 percent of your high school class). However, most students who apply to live in Honors Housing are “Honors Course Eligible” and therefore they can automatically register for honors courses.”

That shouldn’t be a problem since UHC Freshman housing is in Sutherland and has 400+ spots. Every year I know of people who were not “auto-UHC” who were granted permission to apply and live there.

But you do have to apply to honors llc, you are not automatically considered.

Right. You’re asking for permission to apply to that housing. But UHC turns away very few people because of how many beds (i.e. spots) they have
