Chances at Hopkins/Duke?

Hey guys

I am an Asian-oriental female living in the Midwest. My unweighted GPA is a 3.8 and I have not received any standardized test scores yet. My PSAT score was 196, however, which placed me in the 94%ile.

I would appreciate all comments and criticisms. Also, I haven't researched any other colleges except Duke and Johns Hopkins-- any suggestions of other schools I should look into? Thanks so much!!

looks good, but please tell me you're not applying premed. If so it'll be a reach.

looooks damn good

You have a great chance at both schools, it will all rest on the quality of your essays and recs. Since you want to go to Hopkins/Duke my guess is you want to do something biology/biomedical engineering related. Be warned that JHU's BME department is harder to get into compared to other majors offered there, but if you were to specify anything else you will have difficulty transfering in. The acceptance to JHU BME (because its #1) is about ~24% compared to ~30% for overall acceptances. Your chances of getting in will NOT be lower if you specify anything else biology related. Still, your chances are great and other schools you may want to consider are UC-Berkeley, UC-San Diego, Washington Univ in St. Louis, University of Pennsylvania, and University of Michigan.

Thanks for the info, asdfTT123!

I'm getting reccomendation letters from the science and english department heads at my school, both of whom know me pretty well b/c i just went to arizona for a week w/ the science dept head, and the english dept head reccomended me for a couple junior book awards and he's my advisor. Both of them have previously written me reccomendation letters for summer programs, etc.

I was thinking of applying w/ an undecided major to both schools, since I'm really not sure what i want to do yet. my resume shows strength more so in the liberal arts, though id love to go into science. I guess i kind of put myself in a jam with this situation

my college counselor reccomended U of Michigan as my safety school but seeing that the class of '05 had trouble getting into U of M this year (they were all in-state applicants), im not so sure about my own chances of getting in. My mom, dad and currently my brother attended USCD so hopefully the alumni factor will help me out

You appear to be a strong candidate. I must commend you on your ECs. That could very well set you apart from the pack. However, Duke is not a sure-fire for even the best in America.

If the opportunity for an alumni interview arises, take it. I loved my interview. I actually believe it helped distinguish me during the admissions process. Also, make sure your essays exude passion. Duke wants to see that you are not just an excellent student, but a passionate individual who can, in the future, contribute to society.

Just maintain your level of excellence during your senior year and enjoy life. I think you are an excellent candidate, but who knows what goes through the minds of adcoms these days. I hope I did not come off as pretentious. Good luck on the college process. Hopefully you will join me next year :)

Whatd you get on your SATs? Aim for a 1450 plus (or, I guess a 2200+) and you should be fine for both schools

if you are applying premed though, any school will do, not just Duke and JHU

Thanks so much, Majayiduke09, that was really encouraging!!

thethoughtprocess:

I just took the new SAT in may so im waiting on my scores....wow a 2200... i was hoping just to break a 2000 or 2100! (im a terrible standardized test taker)

I took a couple diagnostic tests before i took the actual SAT and got 2000 raw, so hopefully with the curve figured in with the real one I might score higher? i'll keep my fingers crossed

lol, ok, 2200 was arbitrary...2000 or 2100 should be fine

anyways, everything else looks awesome, good luck

haha 2000 i can hope for! thanx thethoughtprocess!
