Chances at JHU ED?

Alright, so I'm a high school senior from the San Francisco Bay area. I have always had my heart set on going to JHU, so I'm planning to apply early decision. I just wanted some feedback from people to see if I have a legitimate chance at getting accepted from the information that I have provided. I would also appreciate if anyone gave me some suggestions on what else would be eye-catching on my application and tell me what school other than JHU I should apply to.
Additionally, please no hateful comments!

SAT I: 2250 (first time), 2300 (second time)
SAT II: Biology 780, US History 690, Physics 800, Chinese w/Listening 780.
GPA: 3.49 UW

Course Load:
Freshman: Literature/Writing, Biology, Oral Composition, PE 9, Principles of Business, Geometry, Chinese 1

Sophomore: Algebra 2, Media Assistant, Chemistry H., World Literature, World History, Dance, Chinese 2

Junior: US Literature, US History, AVID Tutor, Chinese 3, Pre-Calc., Journalism, AP Biology

Senior: AP Literature, Government/Economics, AVID Tutor, AP Chemistry, Journalism, AP Calculus AB, Chinese 4 H.

I have also completed a College Level Physics course, over the summer.

Something else to keep in mind, my school doesn't allow AP's before Junior year.

EC's: Volunteer at local hospital for two years, member of high school magazine for two years, officer of teen publication for two years, Secretary, and then President, of Medical Explorers club, and Treasurer of Future Practicing Physicians Network.

Also if it matters, I am a female of North Indian/Indonesian descent. Thanks!

JHU ED: Reach

What is eye catching is your GPA, which is low for a highly competitive school like JHU. Do you have an idea where you stand in your class? Your test scores are great, but the GPA may be the issue. I’m assuming you took the most challenging curriculum available at your school. Make sure that your essays really stand out.

When all is said and done there is no way for anyone other than a JHU admissions officer to assess your chances.

Best of luck to you.

As PsychoDad10 said, your Test Scores are great but, the GPA is low. However, if you write a good essay, all things could change! Your ECs are also good! But, JHU’s ED acceptance rate is nearly 40%! So, in a sense, you do have a chance! I also want to apply to Hopkins ED! Could you please look at my thread and see if I said a chance?: Chance me (I’ll Chance Back!!) JHU, GW, NYU, BU, UVA,UConn, Wake Forest, and Brown

@Catria, Which other schools do you think I should apply to?

@PsychoDad10, Thanks for the advice! I’ll definitely make sure that my essays stand out.

@sergiok, which other schools do you think I have an even better chance of getting into?

JHU ED: Mid Reach

Your GPA is the only thing that really hurts your application. Is there some way that you could explain why it was low in an essay (i.e. a bad freshman year with an upward trend)?

If bad freshman year is why you have a 3.49 then recalculate the GPA without freshman year, in which case you’re good to go at an UC…

Then again, if you want matches and safeties, here are some questions that need answers:

Your budget

Your intended major(s)

College size preferences

Geographical preferences

Well, i think you might have a chance at schools in the Top 30 in my opinion. Like Boston College, University of Rochester, or maybe Lehigh University. I’m not quite sure, why do u plan on studying? Could you alp please chance me back? I would really appreciate it since I also plan on doing ED for Hopkins

Don’t send physics sat. Anything under 700 in my opinion should be kept to yourself.i didn’t read the comments but by now you should know that ed raises your chance to 40%. Essay is critical because it’s really valued.(maybe not as much as u of Chicago value it but very close)

@frostyy, That’s basically what happened. Freshmen year didn’t go well for me, and sophomore year was pretty average. Junior year was when I really picked up my grades. And I had personal reasons for this, so I could probably mention that in my application.

@Catria, Budget isn’t a problem at all. For my major I’m debating between Biology or Neuroscience. For college size, I would prefer a medium to large school. Lastly, I only care that the college is in (or near) an urban city. Location in the US doesn’t matter. Hope this helps!

@ sergiok, I think you meant “what” I plannned on studying. At this point I’m debating between Biology and Neuroscience.

@vgeagle, I think you meant that I shouldn’t send in my US History SAT score, because I got an 800 in Physics. I will definitely keep what you said in mind! Also, are there any universities at which you think I have a better chance of getting admitted?

I can think of some medium-large schools near an urban center.

Safeties - University of Miami, Boston University, Fordham, American, University of Maryland, University of Georgia

Matches - UCLA, NYU, Boston College, USC

Low reaches - Emory, Cal

Reaches - Georgetown, Rice

@teenbodybuilder, Thanks for the list! Can you tell me what your thoughts are on JHU?

Basically echo what others have said. It’s a very selective school but ED helps you a lot. Your gpa is low but test scores are great. Write a good essay and you have a really good chance.

For everyone who has responded, or will respond, I have calculated my UW GPA excluding freshman year. I think this might help a bit more to estimate my chances at JHU ED.

UW GPA: 3.645

Hope this helps!

Berkeley: Match/High match
UCLA: Match
UWA: Low match
UIC: Safety (you just can’t have a med school without a decent biology program)
UMD: Safety
Tulane: Match (it’s about as hard to get into as Cal but merit aid is not out of the question)
GWU: Match (might get tufted)

@Catria, Thanks for the list! I was wondering with my updated GPA, can you, and maybe anyone else who reads this, suggest some other universities that are in the following categories?:
1: Match
2: High Match
3: Low Reach
4: Mid Reach
5: High Reach

As an incentive, I am willing to chance back to people that respond to this. Thanks!

It will be a reach for you to apply as a Premed/Natural sciences type major at JHU, and your blurb reeks of looking for a premed spot, so unless you can show some case for another major, I’d say nope.

@cptofthehouse, I was wondering if you could give me some reasons as to why you feel I don’t have a chance at a Premed type major at JHU. This way, I will be able to plan my application, and make whatever changes I need to make. Also, just wondering but, is it possible to get admitted to Hopkins as an undecided major and then switch to something like Premed?

The 3.645 UW w/o freshman year was there to help find other safeties/low matches (or for Stanford, which is a pretty high reach)

@Catria, Thanks! Just wondering, where would JHU stand? You mentioned before that it was a reach. A mid-reach?
