Hi I'm a Junior in Houston, looking into BHP. I've read everything I can find on CC about it, and have found just how varied acceptances can be so I wanted to get an opinion with my specific stats. Thank you in advance.

SAT: CR: 730 M: 620 Writing: 640 (8 on Essay.) Ranked 3/314

All AP's, still testing and awaiting results in July.

NHS 10-12, VP Senior Year (Elected)

Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership Award

Varsity Football 10th and 11th (Captain)

Track 9th-11th

Best Student- World History (10th), Honor Roll 9th-11th

Should have about 175 hours community service by time of application.

Distinguished Grad. Plan

Semi-fluent in Spanish (Three years, including two Pre-AP)

I am a white, suburban male, but lower income. I'm also planning on great essays and letters of rec. I realize my stats are not the best, but I'm still hoping! Thanks again.

SAT is very low for BHP.

I was afraid of that, but I was hoping leadership/ec’s might compensate. Any chance at reg. McCombs?

You definitely want to get your SAT M+CR up (I believe the average for this year was 1480, and trends point upward). Don’t worry too much about the writing score.

However, leadership is by far the most important component. You want 4-5 leadership positions if you want to stand a fair shot. In my experience, essays/rec were just formalities and hold very little weight.

At the BHP information session I went to the admissions director, Mrs.Perry, said applicants need at least a 650 on the Math portion of the SAT to be considered. I’ve also noticed that being a National Merit Scholar (whether finalist, commended, Hispanic, or achievement) really helps. So definitely get the math SAT up and maybe apply in the early admissions cycle, don’t know how much it helps but it can’t hurt. Best of luck!
