Alright, I'm a junior right now, looking to hopefully go to Michigan State, not sure if I can get in though. Here's some stuff:

ACT: 25

SAT:
CR: 560
Math: 560
Writing: 610

GPA: 2.9

ECs: Lacrosse (going to be 4 years), Drumline (3 years), some volunteer work.

Let me know what my chances would be to get in. Also, I'm pretty sure that my ACT score would be better to use than my SAT, but let me know if you think otherwise. I'm in state also, and there have been at least 12 people in the past two generations of my family that have gone to MSU.

I applied to Michigan State and got in just wont be attending. I had the same SAT scores but a higher gpa (3.2). anyways I got in with a study abroad and academic schoalrships. I think u should be able to get in. they make admissions sound higher because of their stats but in reality its not that hard as they make it seem.
Anyways I applied to several big ten school so ill give u my entire list with results since u have similar stats to me.

Ohio State: accepted with scholly

Michigan State: accepted with scholly

Indiana: accepted

Purdue: accepted and accepted at Biz school (it is not the general requirements for biz)

Loyola Chicago: accepted

University of Miami (fl): Accepted and will be attending.

Anyways u have a good shot at most of the big tens. Id say ur in at Michigan State. Ohio State is a bit harder though.
Hope I helped, message me if u have any other questions!

Definitely a reach. Your GPA is what's hurting you. A few years ago, I would have said you stood a decent shot. However, MSU has become increasingly competitive. The middle 50% range for GPA is 3.4-3.8. So as you can see, you're quite a bit below that. If you've taken rigorous courses that will be taken into account. My brother was rejected from MSU with a 3.1 GPA and a 29 ACT. Several of my peers were rejected although they had 3.5 GPAs. Your ACT and SAT scores are pretty much equivalent to each other and are within MSU's range. If your parents are MSU graduates that will definitely help...other relatives not so much.

By all means apply, but make sure you apply to safety and match schools, as well.

If I got my GPA up to a 3.0 or 3.1 would my chances go up?

Well, any boost in GPA would help. I think the jump from a 2.something to a 3.something is definitely an important one. A 2.something GPA has a stigma attached to it. However, I still think you'd be a reach with a 3.0 or 3.1 GPA. If you apply in late August, early September you might stand a decent shot. You might be deferred first until they see your senior grades (they better be good).

I definitely want to stress the importance of applying **regardless* of what the posters say here. The people here tend to be overly critical and will predict your chances to be less than they are. The truth is, no one here can make completely accurate predictions.

Good luck!

Thank you for dispelling the myth that acarta provided that my school is pretty much a piece of crap school by saying this :

I'm sorry about your brother and your peers not getting into MSU. =(

To the OP: I'm not good with the stats thing so you should check out the MSU forum. Quincy will be able to answer your question and provide a more accurate assessment. But I would apply to MSU regardless you will never know if you don't try. If you need help with anything (other than stats) regarding MSU, feel free to PM me.

Im not saying its a piece of crap. I would not have applied there if it where.
I almost went there because of their generous scholarship offer. What I am saying is this: Michigan State is not an extremely difficult school to get into.
they dont want many C's but a solid 3.0 is still good for Michigan State.
In my case I had a 3.2 and a 1700 on the SATs. I submitted extra things such as 4 letters of reference and an essay. This helped but my point is that a 3.0 can still get u into Michigan State. I got in with a scholarship and I didnt have an outstanding record.

BOSOX: look I suggest u do what others mentioned. Apply. I along with many others here do NOT know the outcome of what will happen. I remember most of the schools I applied to, I was told in CC where all reaches. Michigan State was supposedly a Match/reach for me just for getting in without scholarships. To begin with I was OOS and still got in WITH money. '
I am sure that if u show them interest and that u do have great qualities U WILL get in.
Wether you trust me or not, I suggest u just apply and then judge ;) Mayby im wrong but im pretty sure im not crazy when I tell u that u will get in to MSU, a great school. MSU IS truly a great school. Just because they accept more than 50% of the applicants dosnt mean they are a "crappy school."

I think you have a decent chance. SAT scores definitely fit the billing for MSU, and they accept 73% of applicants. Unless you give them a reason to reject you, you should be good. GPA is low but test scores should make up for it.

I got into Michigan State and I will be attending, your gpa will hurt you. If you could raise it to a 3.0 you will have a lot better chance of being accepted. 2.somethings have a very bad stigma about it, if you raise it to the 3.something you will have a lot better chance because the human mind will make the adcoms think your a lot better student even though there is only a .1 difference.

I was accepted with a 3.2 and 27 ACT, what you could also do is try to raise your ACT, if you truly study for it you could get it to a 30.

I think A2Wolves prretty much summed it up.
U should be fine. They accept 73% of the applicants which is pretty high.
u have a solid grade point average and solid SAT scores. Write an essay, send a letter of reference and finally just a letter showing ur interest in MSU.
if u do that, I would be truly shocked if u dont get in.

Bosox, I think with a 2.9 you are going to have a problem because your SAT scores, while decent, aren't blowing the doors off. The average GPA for MSU's freshman class is now over 3.6, and it is rising. As for MSU's accepting 73%, this is deceptive because the pool is considerably more competitive than, say, one Michigan's directional schools -- many students with lesser stats self-reject themselves out of the pool. Also, you can't necessarily predict admissions for a university based on its last year's stats. This is particularly true of a large, state U gaining in popularity as MSU is from year to year.

Also, even though MSU did not engage in the type of affirmative action banned for U-M's undergrad admissions program by the US Supreme Court, MSU knows it is being carefully watched as one of the 2, large prestige schools of the state -- this is particularly true of the (wrongheaded imho) Prop. 2 anti-affirmative action law last fall. Some feel the affect of the U-M case and Prop 2 are creating more competitve pools for MSU... But no one quite knows how this will all shake out, but suffice it to say, MSU is growing more competitive, not less, and a 2.9 without knockout SAT's will probably hurt you... On top of that, MSU has always emphasized grades more than test scores anyway.

Bosox, one thing that could help is the quality of your HS and curriculum. MSU does take into consideration lower grades from schools that are well known to be more difficult and they will also look at your particular curriculum... The fact your a legacy won't carry much weight -- not at MSU, U-M or most competitive state schools. It's traditionally been a practices for prestige privates, anyway, although I've heard even the Ivies are downplaying legacies more as they are, more and more, looking to globalize their student bodies. Of course, if your a Bush or a Dupont, ...

I go to East Grand Rapids High School which is like 4th or 5th in Michigan I think, so that will probably help me out. It's known as a pretty tough school I think.
