Chances at NYU, Columbia, Brown, UMichigan, UCB and Notre Dame

Alright, for my first two years in high school, I was a real slacker... it was only until junior year that I really began to pick up the pace. Here are my grades, note that my school only offers two honors classes per grade. My senior year hasn't began but my schedule will probably consist of: Calculus, Yearbook, A Medical Program offered at my school, and Expository Writing

Oh, and a little background info on my school and me: It's a school located in the South Bronx (obviously poor area) with a very tight budget... not many classes are given outside of the core needed, and we have no teams, either. I'm of African descent and from a lower middle class family...

I have legacy at NYU btw (mom)

note 65 > is passing in NY.

Oh, and regents are tests administered at the end of the year by the state in core subjects...

My school due to expenses doesn't have a team... but I'm a great player at basketball
120 hours community service
Job at New York Hall of Science (11)
Tutored people.... no idea if that counts either...
I'm also an avid reader, but I doubt that would count for much...

Nonetheless, thanks for your time...

grades are obviously not great... but nice SAT scores... i think Columbia and Brown are reaches and the rest you have a reasonable shot at... if you applied to all, i think you would be in at NYU and at least one more...

i'm sorry but SATs are decent...they won't save you
those grades are really bad and you're probably going to an in-state university...SUNY...maybe.

Not even NYU with the legacy or recommendations?

i honestly think you have a good shot at NYU... although i may have been a little easy overall

well it's not my place to say that you DEFINITELY won't get in, but NYU is getting very competitive.

What is your overall GPA? I just see so many 70 somethings and 80 somethings...but then you have high grades at your CC, so you would probably have a good shot going to a CC and then transferring if you're not accepted. You DEFINITELY need some safeties though, b/c even if NYU were a match, it'd be a match/reach.

My cumulative average from the beginning of my junior year to its end was a 95.3... I don't know what that equivalates to on the 1.0 - 4.0 GPA scale...

hexagonshuffle:

UCB: Slight Reach (out of state)

really??? how is it that high? maybe i read your grades wrong...but i only saw 14 A's out of like 30 courses and the rest were mostly low Bs and Cs and even Ds. If it's a 95.3 then you have a lot better chance, but I don't see where you're getting that number when compared with those listed on your OP.

oh i'm sorry i guess i don't understand the regents thing...it seems like you failed a bunch of stuff lol

if those 99s and such at the end of each list are your main grades, yeah you're in NYU, ND, probably Berkeley and UMich, the rest are reaches just like for everyone.

^^ regents have no affect on the actual grade, but they appear on the trascript as means of knowing how well a student knew the subject... those are my grades from freshman to junior... they were low originally, but came up, hence why i want to know if my chances have been hindered since i had a bad first 2 years

Grades from the core clases in my junior year (2nd semester):

pre calc 98
ap lit 99
earth science 98
world history 97
economics 95
med program 90

that averages out to a 96.1... my mistake.

first semester grades for junior year range around the 90s as well. the the 95.3was for first term, and that included electives, but all the cores were still in the high nineties. as i stated in my original post... i didnt do well the first two years but got on track for the third...

ok well i stand by what i said in the above post...you're in at NYU, just make sure you wanna spend that much money :)

ND Berkeley UMich good chances
Brown Columbia pretty good chances considering you are African American you will be at an advantage but these two are always wildcards.

Good luck

alright, im off to bed.. any other responses on possible selection please post...

is his SAT considered higher than average?

For the area my school is located, as well the projected scores there, definitely...

For most of those schools SATs are higher than average, except Columbia and Brown. They are in the 50% midrange though, which is good.

Just top 50%? Not even in the 25% range? Ahhhh.

well you can ck collegeboard.com to see for sure...but if your scores fall into the 50% midrange, and yours do barely, then you're at the upper end of the middle 50%...meaning 25% did worse, and 25% did better...you're probably top 30-35%
