Someone I know has a 3.7 GPA up until now, and received a 169 on his LSAT, which just happens to be the median GPA and LSAT for NYU. He will probably apply to more law schools, but out of curiosity, if you have THE median GPA and LSAT for a certain law school, what is the likelihood that you will get in?

This is where softs kick in.

A 169 is the 25% percentile LSAT for NYU, not its median. So I would say your friend's chances at NYU are pretty slim unless he has significant soft factors.
