Chances at Stanford. I will chance back.

Hi everyone. My dream school is stanford. Do I have a shot? (I'm an incoming senior)

Stats:
3.92 Unweighed 9-11 GPA
3.96 Unweighed 10-11 GPA
4.58 9-11 Weighted GPA
4.7 10-11 Weighted GPA
My school doesn't rank but I am definitely not in the top 10% because I didn't take any of the joke honors courses sophomore year (i.e. algebra 2 honors, spanish 3 honors). I have taken all the hard junior year courses though. My only two B's are freshmen english honors first semester and second semester pre-calc honors (I was sick a lot and therefore had tons of absences which made learning math much more difficult and I had a horrible teacher)
ACT: 30 (28 english, 30 math, 32 reading, 28 science). I am retaking the test in September and expecting a score of 33. My tutors were horrible. They just read the prep book to me.
SAT: haven't taken and will not take. I like the ACT much better.
SAT Subject: 770 US History, 710 Biology E, 650 Math (horrible teacher). I will be retaking math 2 and Bio. I'm expecting a much higher math 2 score considering the fact that I did not study for the math at all and I should do somewhat better in bio E (like 750). that was a weird test day. Lots of smart people I know did poorly.
APs: European History-5, US History-5, Comparative Government and Politics-5, and I didn't take the course. English Language-4, Human Geography-4.
Senior Year Schedule
AP Calculus BC
AP Physics C
AP Environmental Science
AP English Literature
AP Government/AP Economics
Science Research? (honors weighted; might take)
Model UN
Varsity Golf (spring)

Extracurricular:
4 Year Varsity Golf member. Team Co-MVP as a freshmen. My team got 2nd in league the last two seasons have therefore have made the playoffs. I have played in the post season as an individual every year. I am also a four year captain or co-captain. (my team freshmen year was sort of a joke and thats why I was made captain). A captain doesn't really do anything. Its just the person(s) that are the most dedicated to the team and set the best examples.
Southern California PGA Junior Tour: I have played in 3 SCPGA tournaments in the summer of 09 and my best finish is tied for 15th. I will be playing in many more and expect to get some top 10 finishes.
Camp Escapades (volunteering with autistic young children for 3 weeks): Summer 09.
About 240 hours of service by the time college apps. are complete.
3 Year member of KIWIN'S (a district of Key Club International). I was elected school recording secretary as a sophomore and I currently serve as the KIWIN'S district secretary). This job encompasses the entire KIWIN'S district which is made up of between 40-50 schools and 9 divisions. I also have been among the top 3 members in terms of hours completed for the last two years.
Grade AP European History Essays.
Science Bowl (B team, non-competitive) and Ocean Bowl team (fifth place at LA Surf Bowl). I will probably do science bowl (the competitive team) and science olympiad next year)
I also participated in my schools science fair and the local Intel Science Fair.
I have been a member of the Junior State of America at my school since junior year. I was appointed Co-secretary as a junior and co-historian as a senior. I also served as an expansion agent for the southern california JSA region.
MUN: 2 years membership. Awarded outstanding at LAIMUN.
Spanish Honors Society, California Scholarship Federation since freshmen year.
Attended a golf camp at claremont mckenna college in the summer of 08 in order to meet the coach of claremont mckenna and get a better idea of what college golf was like.

Letters of Rec:
Great letter from AP European History teacher (sophomore teacher though)
AP English Language Teacher letter: Should be pretty good.
My golf coach will write me a great letter.
I can probably get another letter from either a Stanford Alumni or someone associated with the school.
I am a male and part mexican.

Very nice stats
I don’t know much about stanford, but your information makes you sound strong for almost any school :)!

you definitely have a chance. right now your weakness is definitely in test scores… is a 30 even in stanford’s range? one thing I notice that you should definitely try to eliminate when writing your essays and doing your interview is that you tend to blame people (ie teachers) for your own mishaps. everyone has ****ty teachers, no college wants to hear about it. you got the grade/test score/experience you got and that’s what you should live with. also, blaming your ACT tutors is a little strange, considering most people don’t even get tutors or study for either the SAT or ACT. (I took the SAT with no prep besides the PSAT six months before for example)
I don’t mean to lecture, but I just think this is a huge turn off of which you should be aware.

Thanks for the info. I definitely won’t blame anyone else on the apps. but since this is a forum, its ok to say what you really think happened. My lone 10-11 B in pre calc was more of the result of excessive absences due to two really bad illnesses. I prefer to have an ACT tutor as I’m not that great at self study. Thanks for the advice/encouragement. I’ll chance you.
