Chances at Stanford University?

This fall I will be applying to Stanford as a potential freshman undergrad, and would like to get some input on my chances of getting in.

I have a 3.9 unweighted cumulative GPA since freshman year, or a 4.2 weighted GPA - that's excluding freshman year. I'm not too sure about Stanford's policies in terms of freshman year grades.

My current SAT score is 2120, though I will be retaking the exam in the coming months and expect to do a bit better.

As far as extracurricular activities are concerned, I have several, all of which I have been involved with throughout my high school career, and that range from a leadership program with a local water district to a summer program at Stanford University.

I know it's hard to assess me without a lot of other information, not to mention my personal statements, but I'm hoping to get at least a few objective opinions anyway. Additionally, I'm deciding between applying under Restrictive Early Action and Regular Decision. I'm absolutely confident that if I were to get accepted into Stanford, I would attend, but I guess I'm not sure about whether I would stand out among the other early applicants.

Literally ANY input would be fabulous.

Thanks in advance!

ilovecardigans, yes you are right it is very hard to give an opinion with the info your giving us, but i think you would have a decent shot if you improve a your SAT (2200+) and you show passion through your EC’s, whether you stand out or not will depend in how well prepared your application is(essays, teacher recs, etc);regarding the early action, i don’t think it will considerably increase your chances. Finally, you may want to take a couple of SAT subject tests, i know they are not required but they’re recommended(consider math II).Good luck.
Chance me back if you can http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1390369-where-should-i-apply-peruvian-student.html

Thanks for your response.

Do you happen to know whether or not applicants are evaluated in the context of their school?

Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think they’ll really evaluate you based on the competitiveness of your school unless it’s an elite private school or something like that. If it’s a public high school, I’d expect that you’d be treated the same no matter how competitive it is.

The summer program at Stanford will, however, most definitely help your case. Depending on the specifics of that leadership position, that will also be very important.
Your GPA seems to be fine (class rank? hopefully you are at least in the top 10%), however as you noted your SAT is a bit on the lower end. Shoot for a 2200. I don’t know offhand if Stanford superscores the SAT, but you have a very good chance at getting a 2200 on there if they do.

Good luck. I think with some stronger test scores you’ll have a good chance; probably like a low-medium reach.

I’m in the top 20% by .1, literally. 3.94 is what I have currently, and 3.95 constitutes the 10% range.

Thank you very much for your response! I suppose what I’m a bit confused about is whether or not the early applicant pool is way more qualified than I am, and if I’m better off applying with the regular decision-ers. I’m not even sure why this is a notion planted in my head, but any thoughts on this would be wonderful. I’ve been told that Stanford has a very low deferral rate in terms of REA, and I’m not sure what to make of this.

Wow that sucks. I have a friend who’s in the same boat as you. The cutoff was something like 158 and he was 159 :(

I’m not sure about this, but I think that you’ll have a better shot of admission with ED over RD period. At any rate, it’s going to be based on a little bit of luck either way. Hopefully you can write an essay that really stands out, I believe that’d help you out a lot.

Haha yeah, it’s not a happy place.

Yeah, I figure if they don’t accept me the first time around, my chances wouldn’t have been much better during regular decisions.

I think I will do REA after all, and just blow them all out of the water with my personal statements.

Thank you so much for all of your input, you’ve actually made me feel a lot better!
