I posted this on another board cause it seemed more appropriate, but maybe I'LL get replies here, heh.

Ok, heres the deal. I'm applying to some boarding schools for my 11th and 12th grade. I'm applying to Andover, Exeter, and Groton. I dont know if anybody here has been to any of these schools, or knows about what it takes to get into them- lets put it this way. Last year, Andover had 191 applicants for its Junior year. They accepted 27.

So, I'm worried. If anybody knows about these schools, could you tell me what you think of my chances?

1018 on the SSAT- 98th percentile.

I took AP US history as a 9th grader, got a 5, am taking 3 APs this year.

Ive completed my tour and interview, and I thought they went very well. Applications were in on time, I though my essays were good- that stuff is normal.

Problem- Im homeschooled. All these schools accept homeschoolers, and they try to test for problems in the interview and with your transcript.

What do you guys think?

EDIT: Oh yea, extracurriculars. I dont play sports, but I take my theatre very, very seriously.

BTW- I saw somewhere else you mention Durham Academy- Im applying there also! You live in NC? Where, if so?

Come on, people! I would post this on the prep school thread, but its so crowded people might ignore it. Give me your thoughts! Am I good enough? I dunno what the average SSAT is for these schools. 98 is prolly higher, but by how much?

j- cause Im a sophomore. I dont wanna take the SAT until I know I can get the best score possible for me. And I didnt take the PSAT cause it was interchangable with the SSAT.

jeez. Does nobody know? Ive had no real answers from anybody. Its too late now to take a different test, or to apply to a different grade. I took the SSAT, and I applied to the eleventh grade. what are my chances. Oh, and I spent some time looking at the boarding schools. Turns out they accept a fourth of the applicants to their 9th grade class. So good luck esa, and apply to 4 or 5 ;-)

TJ, I have been asking the question of the school's you mention. What I'm told is that most kids accepted past 10th grade are athletes. I can not give percentages though. I find these schools to be very candid about what they seek so don't be afraid to call and ask.

EAS, look at boardingschoolreview.com for perventage accepted.

TJ- it isn't too late to apply to a different grade. You can call up the school and ask that your application be considered for 10th grade as well. Sometimes they do that automatically.

I don't think the fact that you're homeschooled is a big problem. But they might look into it. I think it's kinda weird how you're jumping from home-schooled environment to a boarding school one... polar opposites.

I think you stand a fair chance. The admissions people should understand that you dont have ECs due to the homeschooling issue. you should probably show your passion and dedicated to theater in your apps to compensate for the lack of sports.

the Andovers admission rate you gave: did they accept 29 out of 191 or did they enroll 29? You have to take the yield rate in account. Like at Exeter last year for the 10th grade, they accepted 130 out of 400 or something, and 80 chose to attend. Yield rate 65% there... Andover's is 80 or 85 I think

^ posted that on the other board.. didnt see that you started a new one

Those are some very interesting stats, Tara, thanks.

I believe they said 'accept', but they could have meant enroll, I have no idea. I recently read that 98th percentile get you into 'special consideration' for groton, so I'm pretty happy about that. I'm kina worried about those scores, though. I got a perfect sc ore on my verbal, 350, 99th percentile. My reading was 95 percentile, but my math was 84th percentile. Still. Look on the bright side.

Honestly and frankly though, why does it matter what we say your chances of admission are? It doesn't matter if I say you have a 100% chance, or a 0% chance - it doesn't help anything and it changes nothing. There's nothing you could do anymore, since all the apps were sent out already. But, if you really want to know, I think you have absolutely ZERO chance of getting admitted (well maybe 0.001%) I don't know why you even bothered to apply...waste of $100. Sorry...

Just kidding! Sorry, but I just wanted to get my point across. I'm sure when you read that post, you were thinking "Wow! He doesn't know sh...t! I definitely have a really good chance of getting admitted, I'm not listening to him! He doesn't know what he's talking about. " Honestly, I think you have at least a solid 60% chance of admission at any of those schools. Homeschooledness MIGHT actually be an advantage, since all these schools SAY they want "diversity." Your SSATs showed that you can handle the academic rigor at Exeter/Andover/w.e, which is very important to show, since you are a homeschooler. But all that I said is pointless, that will not change the inevitable news (maybe it made you feel more confident, but if you get rejected, it's even harsher). But, good luck! I'm sure you'll get into at least one of the schools.
