I'm going into tenth grade.
I was supposed to apply for the a school this year, but I screwed up my ninth grade year.

Overall I got:

Enriched Language Arts: A
Gym: A
Art: D
Algebra: B
Biology: C
Spanish: B
Western Civilization: B

I was sick a lot ninth grade. And I did no extracurriculars.

This year Im trying to kick butt by being the first in my school to do college coarses.
Voleyball
Lots of community service
United Nations Club
Spanish Club

Ill get all A's using all my credits and be taking night classes.

It makes me sick thinking how I screwed up last year.

Any ideas?

I was supposed to be applying for Deerfield, Hotchkiss, Groton

Also, is there anything else I can do to improve my chances.

Also I’d be applying for eleventh grade: Here’s my full list of schools:

Phillips Academy
Phillips Exeter Academy
Deerfield Academy
Hotchkiss School
Choate Rosemary Hall
Lawrenceville School
Groton School
Milton Academy
Peddie School
Middlesex School
Taft School
Kent School
Blair Academy
The Governor’s Academy
Northfield Mount Hermon
The Loomis Chaffee School

get involved in community service, and make sure you make it out of the grading period with straight A’s. Do you just want to go to a boarding school, or is it these schools in particular you wish to go to? It shouldn’t hurt to add a couple of lower tier schools on that list. edit scratch that, looks like you’ve got plenty of schools on your mind, lol.

yeah I wouldn’t say I was rich either. That’s around 800$ and honestly I woudn’t waste that much money on just applying, but that’s just me and even if let’s say u do get into most of them, you are going to pick one school to go to so all the rest of the money is wasted. Thus you should pick your favorites and maybe 2 higher acceptence rate schools, for backup.

Im applying to like 8 schools so I’m going to go and see if I can find a lot of fee waivers for applications and maybe a fee waiver for the ssat if they have them so I dont have to pay $500 just with applications

i think i will only be applying to like 4 or 5. my top 2 or 3 choices then a match and a safety. As is thats a lot of money for me, but i have saved up enough that i think i can handle it…

That’s a lot of schools to apply to. I would recommend narrowing down your list a bit. It costs around $50 to apply and I’m guessing if you’re applying for financial aid that you won’t want to spend $800 just on applying, plus the cost of taking the SSAT’s.

Apply as a 10th Grade Repeat - you honestly don’t want to waste time applying for the 11th Grade. Plus - jumping from the school you’re at now to any of these schools will be EXTREMELY difficult. Trust me on that. Any good admissions counselor that’s interviewing you will tell you the same if they truly want to see you at their school.

P.S. Don’t just do extracurriculars to make yourself “look good” on paper. These schools can tell the difference between kids that are really passionate about what they’re doing and kids that are just taking part in things for the credit. There isn’t a cookie-cutter way to get into any of these schools - and FA is really tight.

Applying for 11th grade is NOT a waste of time. You could apply for a 10th grade repeat, especially if you’re already young for your grade, but I’m thinking of applying for 11th grade, and I definitely do not want to repeat. Bigger schools like Andover accept quite a few new uppers (not a ton by any means, but they accept enough that they put them together in dorms, etc.)

Also, schools will look at more than just your last year’s transcript, so they will see the poor grades that you posted. Do you have good grades/EC’s from middle school?

Also, I’d make a shorter list with a few “reach” schools like Andover and Exeter, a few more really good, but easier to get into schools and some safeties. Just to make the application process more maneageable and less expensive.
