Chances at TOP selective schools?

What are my chances at top selective (not ivy specifically) schools, as my junior GPA really has me concerned about my standings? Thanks for the help in advance!

Unweighted GPA
Freshman GPA: 3.77
Sophomore GPA: 4.0
Junior GPA: 3.67 (Trying to get 1 B up from a misunderstanding to an A making it 3.75)
Overall GPA: 3.813

Weighted GPA
Freshman GPA: 4.37
Sophomore GPA: 4.6
Junior GPA: 4.47
Overall GPA: 4.48

Class's:
Freshman Year 3/4 Possible Honors. Honors Bio, Honors English, Honors Geometry, (Not Honors Spanish)
Sophomore Year 3/4 Possible Honors. Honors Chem, Honors English, Honors Trig, (Not Honors Spanish)
Junior Year 2/2 APs 2/3 Possible Honors. Honors Physics, AP Language/Comp, AP US History, Honors Jr Precalc
Senior Year I will be taking 6 APs and 1 Honor. AP Macro, AP Micro, AP Literature/Comp, AP Calculus BC,AP Chemistry, Business Management Honors.

Test Scores
ACT - 31 (Trying to get a 32/33 on the June ACT because of rigorous and expensive test prep)

Extracurriculars
Basketball (All 4 Years) Varsity (2 Years)
Orchestra (All 4 Years)
Karate (9th-11th) (3 Years)
Freshmen Mentoring Program (Helping Freshman join the high school community) (3 Years)
Ambassador Program (Helping transfer students join high school community) (2 Years)
Teaching Cello to elementary students (All 4 Years)
Teaching basketball to younger kids over the summer (100 Hours total volunteer)
National Honor Society
Hobby: Investing in the stock market with my stock broker father to help me understand and get involved with the economy

I will also be getting recommendations from my Math teacher of 2 years (straight As in math), and my AP English/AP US History teachers, who gave me Bs second semester of junior year and I was 1 measly % away from an A in both :(.

Also I have a question. Since I will most likely be majoring in Business/Finance, will the Bs in English/Science (accounting for 5/7 Bs) Impact my transcript as harshly? Compared to if I was majoring in a Science or Law or something of an English/Science nature.

bump???

Ok. The major holes I see in your application are your unweighted GPA is weak for top schools (3.9-4.0 is the norm). However if your school has major grade deflation (ie you are in the top 3-5%) this is very much alleviated. Also, CP classes (standard college prep, not honors) are additionally thought of as a weaker schedule. Most applicants to the most selective schools have taken the hardest courseload possible, but your projected Sr. courseload will garner respect.

Test Scores- Weak currently at 31, but if you get >=33 they will be competitive.

EC’s- Fairly typical in terms of depth and breadth, solid volunteering, but no real focus on Bus./Finance. Your hobby will really have to shine through in your essay. There isn’t that many leadership roles.

Overall: You are a fairly typical applicant; I tried to point out some things to make you MORE competitive (ACT >=34, Subject Test strong in Math II, other subject). The main strike you have against you is the GPA, which is too late to change now).

Your chances are fairly average at a very highly selective school like Notre Dame or NYU, but for Ivies (Wharton if you are a Fin. major?) they are likely weaker than most, because of the slightly weaker grades and test scores combined with fairly average EC’s.

I wish you good luck for Next Year! :)

I would say youre a good candidate for admission. From what I’ve heard and who I have talked to, I have heard that varsity basketball really helps a lot because colleges are aware of the time demands. Also, try contacting some of the schools for ball (if youre good enough). You never know, a school like Rice could always use a good practice player or a manager, and the coach can have a huge say with admissions. Also, like the dude ahead of me said, you are very well rounded, and if you can portray that in your essays and suck up to your teachers and counselor, you should be straight.

Chance me back?
