Chances at Tufts?

Here are my stats:

*General: *
I'm currently a Junior
Female
100% Chinese
Live in Maine
Go to a small high school (800 students) - Rarely sends kids to top-notch schools.
My family kind of lived the American dream. We went from rags to riches -- we first lived on a Chinese cook's wage. (hardly enough) THen my parents went on to open their very own Chinese Restaurant, which has been very sucessful.

*Academics: *
Take as many honors classes as possible. I take all the AP classes possible... which isn't say much -- I currently take just one. =(
GPA: 101.98 on a 100 scale, 5% weight for honors classes (which is very little)
Rank: 1/205
Teachers: I could probably get really good recommendations from them. I am realtively known around the school; teachers that I don't even know recognize my face and name. (Sorry, not to sound pompous)

** After-school activities: **
Theatre
9, 10, 11
I'm a prominent actresss. I devote my afterschool life to theatre. I have been in every single play production since Freshman year, oftening recieving lead roles / significant roles. Our theatre group is quite sucessful too; last year, we made it to the New England Drama Festival. Only 2 schools per state may attend. This activity requires a lot of time: 10 - 18 hours a week, depending on how close we are to a performance.

Speech team
9, 10, 11
I really enjoy speech team. Our speech team is exceptional; we have been state champions for more than 7 years consecutive. I'm a prominent speaker. I often place 1st and 2nd in our meets. This year, I've consistently recieved 1st place in the touraments. I've won a few state championship titles.

*Band *
9, 10, 11
I am part of the jazz band. I am 1st trombonist/ section leader. I have made it into KV band, which is audtion-only. I participate as much in band as possible.

Also, under the topic of music, I was asked to join the school's jazz-choir this junior year, which is audition only. The jazz choir did really well last year in the jazz festival - 3rd place in the state of Maine.
*Do group efforts such as these count? If your school placed 3rd or something for jazz band, would that count?

*Sports *
Sports aren't really my thing. Not too gifted in that area. I played tennis Freshman and Sophomore year, but I'm not really good at it. I don't think I'll be including this in my resumé. I only pplay sports so that I don't so severely lack physical activity. I actually played soccer freshman year too, but I despised it.

Amnesty International
Years 9, 10, 11. I've been an active member. I don't know what else to say here. :-)

* Newspaper Staff *
I was supposed to be layout editor, but they put it online so there's no need for one. I write articles. :-D I'll probably omit this one when applying.

I also am part of the National Honors Society, but I heard no one cares about that.

*Awards *
Sheperd Award - 9th grade
Speech/Drama Department Award - 9th Grade
Foreign Language Department Award - 9th Grade
Music/Band department Award - 11th grade .... (Do these awards actually matter?)
Maine Youth Excellence in Art - 9th Grade
KV Band - Audition only. Years 5-11. 2nd chair, 3rd chair trombonist usually
KVC Speech Championship - Poetry, 1st place
State Speech Championship - 2nd place poetry, 3rd place ensemble
New England Drama Festival - One Acts (Recieved a foreign language monologue commendation here)

*Leadership *
Maine Youth Leadership - I attended this Sophomore year. Very fun program :-)
Student Council-- Years: 10, 11
Class Treasurer - Years 9. I left this posiiton to join student council because I felt I was not much help as class treasurer

*Volunteer Hours *
I've got maybe 50 hours or more volunteering so far.
I love to work with children, so I'm in the school's buddy program.
I also tutor some children every Friday for an hour.
I am a member of the Rotary Interact Club.

*SAT Scores *
Hre's where it kind of gets weak. I'm not so good at taking the SATS. The PSAT scores I've recieved so far are quite weak:

540 Math
540 Writing
550 Critical Reading

I've been tutored, and practicing on my own
During practices, now I usually get 700 - 730 on the Writing section. I usually recieve high scores in this area. I rarely get lower than 690 or so.
The math is a huge range. Can be anywhere as low as 500 to something as high as 700. Math is quite weak point.
Critical Reading- I've been able to reach a 710 or so.

Where are my strong points? Weak points? What if I were to apply with an SAT score of 1900?

What other schools may I have the chance to make it into? I'm thinking about applying to Bowdoin, which is in Maine. It doesn't consider SAT scores. :-) I also want to apply to Brown. But Tufts appeals to me the most. I'll be entering liberal arts.

Keep working on those SAT scores; you've got time. Your valedictorian rank (if you keep it up) will probably overshadow weak SAT scores in any case. You'll probably get in to Tufts. See you soon! :-)

Oh, and probably you're a shoo-in at Bowdoin, since you don't have to submit SATs and you're stellar otherwise! Brown would be really hard with those SAT scores, but your rank could help you, though maybe not as much as at Tufts.

Raise your math and reading 150 points and it becomes a safe, safe match. You are truly a stellar candidate, and, other than your test scores (and Asian race, lol), you are an admissions officer's DREAM!

^ May I ask why?

To be honest, I don't feel special at all. I feel very average.

yeah heaven wood
what are u thinking...

i disagree with u

anyway porkfried
ide say if u get ur total sat to 2000+ u should have a good shot.

I also reccomend the ACT
i find it much easier and so do many other people.

if u score like 700 on the writing and cr
and in the 600's u should be fine

good luck

yeah, it's true about teh SAT -- people who don't do that well on the SAT I sometimes do stellar on the ACT... i had a 1280 on the old SAT but then got a 34 on the ACT!... however, i got all 700s-800 on my SAT IIs, don't understand why.. but in any case I ended up with all great scores to send! could happen to you too, you future Jumbo! :-)

BIGTWIX, allow me to explain:

valedictorian rank, excellent GPA, toughest course schedule, consistent devotion to ECs, lots of awards. Other than your SATs, you are a very good student, and, porkfriedrice, don't let ANYONE convince you of otherwise.

Sorry.

Since my other thread didn't get any anwers, I might as well ask here:

http://www.leadnational.org/index.html

I want to apply to this LEAD business program. It interests me so much! Especially my mom and dad are entrepreneurs -- they opened up their own Chinese restaurant.

What are my chances of getting into this program? They have an average SAT score of 1220. My SAT score is well below that.

I also am looking at.....
Boston University
Boston College
John Hopkins University
Georgetown University

What are my chances there?

In at BU, BC, for sure. They fight bare-knuckled for valedictorians. Johns Hopkins and Gtown will be at the same level at Tufts; JHU being slightly easier, Gtown slightly harder.

BU loves vals and takes most of them. :)

try the ACT. my friend had a lot of trouble with the SATs and took the ACTs. she did much better and probably has the choice to go to whatever school she is applying to

^ I heard that the SATS were better to submit than the ACTS.

No, I don't think that's true at all. Send in whatever you do better on.

By the way, are you applying to Tufts ED II since it's your first-choice?

^ I am going to early decision Tufts, yes.

Oh, you're a junior - so you'll do ED to Tufts next year. Porkfriedrice, if you don't get in,I'd be very surprised. Good luck! Any questions with the application process over the next year, let me know. Take care.

^ Is this with the low SAT score?

If I were to send in with a score of around 1900, what are my chances, then?

Would a score of 2000 drastically improve my chances? (I don't want to overestimate myself).

Sorry. I just visited the Tufts campus yesterday, and I dearly want to go!

u don't stand a single chance with an sat score of 1900.

u still don't have a chance with a score of 2000. tufts is way more selective than it used to be. go and get a score of 2100 +

ignorance.

OP, try to do the best you can. If you can get 700's in CR and W and 650+ in math, I think you have a good shot. If all three are in the 600's, it's going to be a bit tougher. I would be worried if anything dropped below 600 though.

Perhaps try the ACT as people have been mentioning.

I know you can improve those scores, because i can speak from experience. I also applied to Tufts. My first SAT was 1880 (580CR, 640M, 660W) and my second SAT was 2150 (670CR, 760M, 720W). A 230 point increase. You can do just the same. Maybe I'll go to tufts and see you there in a few years :)

Take the ACT. Often peopl ewho don't do that well on the SAT do really well on the ACT. You're luckily a junior so you have time to bring it up. I do agree that getting into Tufts with less than a 2000 SAT will be hard, but you still have time!
