chances at u of washington

I am an in-state white male student that does not need financial aid.

i went to a a well respected private school 7-9th grade named University Prepatory Academy a mile away from UW, I then transfered to my local public school. I sadly earned a 2.99 9-11 grade in which I took all honor classes available and then junior year took 3 IB classes. Though this first semester as a senior I have 4 IB classes and an economics class in which I earned a 3.667.

I took the ACT once which i received the scores of

Composite: 21
Math:25
Reading:24
English:19
Science:17
WRITING:10

I took the SAT twice which I received the scores of

Math: 580, 550
Critical Reading: 500, 490
Writing: 460, 470

I am aware of my low GPA and testing scores and I let the admissions committee know that my grades from first semester were greatly improved.

My extracurricular activities consist of

3 years of Key Club including senior year vice president

2 years of DECA including senior year vice president

October of Senior Year I was hired at Discount Tires Co. where I work 20 hours a week.

The past three summers I have spent the first two months of each summer in South Naknek, Alaska commercisal fishing in Bristol Bay. I wrote my personal statements on my experiences working on the boat and my time up there and my second one on my time conversating and hearing stories from the local Native Americans in the small population of 70 village.

3 years of baseball including one varsity.

Please let me know what you think. I turned my application in on December 8 (early) and my application status changed on January 9th, from "Your application is awaiting an initial review" to "We have received all materials required to review your application. Your application will remain in this status until decisions are finalized. We will inform you by postal mail when a decision is made."

THANKS

Honestly, I'd be shocked if you got in.

You have a very very low chance of getting in. Despite your tough course load, your GPA and SAT are really low sorry.

Honestly, I think you guys are being too critical. His extra curriculars are sufficient and he has a job, plus leadership roles - he'll get in. However, you probably won't hear from them until very late.

Last year, a friend of mine got an SAT score of around 1300.. and she got in. She's in-state, average grades, but she had a job, leadership roles, extra curricular activities, etc.

I would say that from your GPA it doesn't appear that you work hard, despite the fact that many people are capable of achieving a decent grade in an AP or IB class, along with having a job and doing sports and clubs.

But from your SAT/ACT scores it appears that you are not very intelligent either. Maybe you're just a bad test taker, but have you explained that to the UW, and you took it twice!

Sorry dude. It just doesn't look like it's going to happen. You can't just take hard classes. You have to do work too.

k well thanks for the feedback.

Anyone else?

i think you have a decent shot at getting in, because even though your GPA may have been low, you have a tough course load, and you have good EC's

Thanks guys. I forgot to mention while in Alaska I was working 6-7 days a week and between 15-24 hours a day with no cell phone, internet or any real civilization for almost the entire time. UW will read about my three experiences and my growth from a greenhorn ( a first year fisherman) to a deck boss (also a leadership position).

The University of Washington says that they look to admit students that they think have "potential."
The fact that you realized your mistakes and really turned things around for your senior year means that you're changing and starting to apply that potential, and that's what they want.

Forget my lame response from earlier. I actually think you have a respectable shot at UW. Good luck, dude!

Any chance at University of Washington?

THANKS

I am not going to sugar coat this for you:
The fact is that UW expects a white male attending U prep to have a higher commutative GPA and Sat scores because their peers have managed to excel under the same educational environment. You have been afforded with a high quality education so UW expects higher SAT scores out of you. I really hope you applied to UO, WSU and Western as well. I would say you have a 15% chance of getting in.

alright thank you for your response and yes I applied to wsu and have already been accepted.

My honest answer: I wouldn't bet my money on it because the SAT and ACT are way too low. Even if the school seems to emphasizes GPA more, the SAT is too low and the GPA is still below average.

Even if you are taking tough classes, you still have to an AT LEAST ok GPA.

Regarding to what yishyoshi said, it is true that UW looks at grade trends, but I honestly think it's a bit late. I would have given you a reasonably good chance at summer program if you had started to improve that GPA from the junior year.

The last thing that may make your slim chance slightly better is how good you did on the IB. I've heard of the IB, but never understood it because AP was the highest level at my school(where I also took all the hardest courses), but assuming you did pretty well on the IB (as in the equivalent of 4 and 5's on the AP), then there is perhaps hope because UW will recognize a late blossoming potential, but even then, the GPA and SAT are a bit hard to overcome.

thankyou for your response... I am aware that my academics are not going to get me into UW. But I am also aware of UW's strong emphasis on extra curricular and personal qualities which I am hoping along with my strong work ethic/leadership experience (part time job, commercial fisherman (including growth in job), tough class load) will be the part that the admission committee will notice. Roughly 75 students were admitted into UW with a GPA lower than a 3.0 which I am aware a lot of them are athletes or posess other outstanding attributes which I know I do not fully have but I am hoping they see potential.

I think you fishing experiences are wonderful and what an opportunity to see a different way of life and learn about a different culture. Maybe that will help and UW will see the
your potential through your essay!

thanks any1can thats what I am hoping for.

matton...good luck, fingers crossed for you! I know how hard this is. I also have quite a few friends that are planning on attending WSU next year as their first choice school and know a couple that are Juniors over there right now that are really pleased with their experience so far. It will all work out!

thank you very much nbg. WSU would not be too bad which I am probably going to choose over Seattle U. I would probably try to transfer in after a year or two.

Hey, you should let us all know if you get in so we can be like, "Whoa, we were wrong about you!"
