Sorry i guess?? i was pretty sure berkeley would be a bit more selective than UCLA considering it is the number 1 public college in the country, but i could be wrong.

UCLA: Match
UCB: Match
Cornell: Match
Harvard: Reach
And I don't know much about Washu

UCLA>> safe
UCB>> match (and UC berkeley is definitely more selective than UCLA)
Cornell>> match (but harder than UCB)
Harvard>> it all comes down to ur essays and the interview, but i think applying pre-med (very strong at harvard) is gonna hurt ur chances (which are very slim to begin with)

Well floppy Cal, and UCLA are matches but going in pre med might kill you seeing how popular those majors are but im sure out of those two you will definiteily get into one. Wash U u will be competitive, esp with ur intern, but depending on the strength of your essays and interivew if u had one, it might be the deciding factor. Lastly, Harvard, u can pray but it really wont happen.

Yes, because at least a few years of practically identical admissions numbers lie. Bad numbers! Bad bad numbers!

flong: does being pre-med really hurt? i mean its not a major or anything, and nothing is impacted at either school except for engineering right? why does it effect my chances?

I can say with absolute certainty that it won't affect you at the UCs. They don't take major into account at admission time.

Next!

Thanks UCLAri for clearing things up, again.

i disagree with UCLAri:

the numbers u're lookin at may be overall numbers, but he's goin for PRE-MED !! you've gotta look at the particular colleges as well. OF COURSE THE MAJOR IS CONSIDERED DURING ADMISSIONS AT UC BERKELEY (maybe not in the other UC's but definitely in BERKELEY)!! Otherwise it wud mean that an admitted student majoring in econ could've gone pre-med just as easily>>>> i find that hard to believe !!!

And the applicant pool at UCB is more talented than UCLA (UCLA is a brilliant college but UCB is just better), so a 25% admission rate at both berkeley and UCLA is not the same thing if u think about it, (just as how Bucknell and Hopkins have similar admission rates).

^ but thats just one mans opinion........
different opinions...........
that's y we're all here right ???

sniper - z,

You said,

But Berkeley says, "For applications to the College of Letters and Science, Natural Resources and Environmental Design, no consideration is given to the indicated major in the review process.

so a 25% admission rate at both berkeley and UCLA is not the same thing if u think about it,

Except that the average GPA and SAT are pretty much exactly the same at both. Actually, the GPA is exactly the same-- 4.26.

to UCLAri:

i've just learned something new about berkeley thanks to u (the quote), i honestly did not know that.

AND are those like the latest UCLA and UCB net stats ??

coz last i checked (2 weeks ago)
UCLA :
Average GPA: 4.13
Average SAT: 1284

Average SAT for Berkeley is 1324 and gpa is higher

so if ur stats are correct.........i apologise
and the major thing i really didnt know so thanks :)

Am i dwelling in the past

does cornell or washu care about being pre-med? its not a major, i don't get why it would matter.

sniper - z,

Average weighted GPA for UCLA 2006 was 4.26, average SAT was 2004
Average weighted GPA for UCLA 2005 was 4.25, average SAT was 1346
Average weighted GPA for UCLA 2004 was 4.25, average SAT was 1352

Profile of class of admits by year.

Average weighted GPA at Cal for 2006 was 4.26, average SAT ranges were:

Reading: 580-710
Math: 620-740
Writing: 590-710

Berkeley admissions.

To be honest, I don't know where you go those numbers...

Unlikely. Major is rarely a deciding factor for admissions with the exception of specialty programs like engineering and business.

UCLAri,

well, you definitely lowered my reliance on the princetonreview a couple of notches.

thanks UCLAri.

anyone else anymore thoughts?

bump bump

I also applied recently to Duke since they extended their deadline. I was wondering if they noticed that starting and submitting an application less than a week before the extended due date looks pretty bad.
