Chances at UC's, stanford, others

Profile

Gender: Male
Resident: Washington State
Race: half-brazilian, half-egyptian....so I'm as big of an under represented minority as you can get (BTW shud i even put under my apps..shud i just put other and then specify or put latino...or even african-american technically haha....or will it matter what I check in terms of my chances???)

GPA: 3.96 UW....probly about 4.3 W not really sure
UC GPA: 4.56...(i counted all honors classes i took im not sure if their UC certified or whatever if they are not then it'll probly be about 4.3 or so

All honors classes offered at school...and 6 AP's: US history, English Lang. and Comp., Calculus, Statistics, English Lit. & Comp., US Gov.

SAT: CR:730 M:680 WR:670 Total: 2080 (a bit low..I wasn't planning on taking them over again im not sure if I'll have time)

Subject Tests: US History: 730
going to take Math II and Chemistry in oct....im really going to focus on these and im hoping to get 750-800 to make up for my low math

EC's
Swimming: 4 year varsity
Team Captain
3 year district qualifier, 1 year state qualifier
Swam club teams as well...lots of time put into that in the summer

Water Polo: 3 years- 2 years varsity
Team Captain
team got 6th at state soph. and junior year

Volunteer Hours: about 40 right now...but ill have hopefully 150 hrs. by app. time

Very involved at church youth programs and whatnot

Im hoping to do some research based volunteering this summer and im still working on that

Others:
English is a second language
Fluent in 3 languages
came to U.S. when i was 8

EC's aren't a lot, but i'm hoping the leadership and hrs. put into swimming/polo plus active in volunteering will be enough

Chances At:
Stanford- top choice
UC Berkeley
UCLA
John Hopkins
Duke
Wash U
Notre Dame

put hispanic. AA will help you

for top schools: bad scores. good GPA. lacking ECs.

reject by stanford, UCB, UCLA (oos)
maybe at JHU, duke
in at washu and ND

you DO have time to improve that SAT. october and november are both good for early admissions. december and january are good for regular.

I've heard that Egyptian-American does not count as African-American--if your ethnicity is Middle Eastern/N. African, rather than sub-Saharan black--so you'd be better off listing yourself as Hispanic. I've also heard that Middle Eastern ethnicity is included under the "Caucasian" umbrella, so it wouldn't help with AA or anything.

hmm...wut wud be a reasonable score on the SAT's and the math/chemistry subject tests to improve my chances?....and im hopefully get more involved in the community this summer to do something so im hoping that by application time my ec's will be a little more... well-rounded i guess

Stanford will not consider you a URM. South American is not given the hispanic boost and Egyptians are not considered black. UCs do not consider race.

I would highly recommend taking the SAT again to make you a vaible candidate at Stanford. You have a good chance at all the UCs depending upon major.

i'm hoping schools like stanford will look at my unique background at least...even if they choose not to classify me as an URM....i'm also counting on a couple excellent essays on my rare/unique upbringing and my countless hours put into swimming/polo will help me be a little more unique than other applicants

and maybe 2200 SAT's and high 700's on subject tests (the SAT reasoning will be tough for me im pretty weak at taking standandized tests..but the subject tests are a little easier as they are specific and more related to actual school work so im confident on high 700's/800)

oh and BTW I go to a large public school where I will be ranked top 1% and no one really goes anywhere but community college or at best Washington State University...will that change anything??

Got AP's back..

English Language: 5
US History: 4...dissapointed I was more prepared for this test i dunno what happened

hopefully this shows there isnt a case of grade inflation in those classes

quick question: I just started thinking about taking the ACT's...if i did well on those instead of taking the SAT's over again (it would be my 3rd time)....would this be acceptable if i got a comparable score to a 2200 on the ACT..(what is that like a 34?)...unfortunately I have sent my scores to berkeley, UCLA, and stanford so they will still see those

chances anyone?

How did you get your scores back so soon?

Phone call for 8 bucks each.

ya call in and you can get ur scores now

Isn't the date that they're available and mailed out July 1st? Did they finish early, and does this mean that they will be mailing them out earlier? I'm hoping so...I know I sound cheap, but I don't want to spend the 8 bucks :), especially if it's going to be only a few days earlier.

@ UCgradmary: "UCs do not consider race."
Supposedly they don't by law, but coincidentally students that are hispanic and african american with lower scores are accepted into UC's .
