Hi, I am a senior at a high school, and I was curious about my chances of admission at these schools.
UC Santa Barbara
UC San Diego
UC Irvine
UC Davis
University of Washington
Of course, the whole reason of putting this here is because I know I do not have very high chance of getting in, so please bear that in mind.
California Resident.
My high school weighted GPA is ~4.15 and unweighted is ~3.55. Weighted ranking is ~80 / 500 and unweighted ranking is ~120/500.
My UC Capped Weighted GPA comes out to be ~3.77.
My ACT score was 31C and SAT subject scores: Korean w/ listening : 800 and Math 2 : 730.
I had a D and couple C’s in my sophomore year due to personal circumstances in which I told a story of what happened in my personal statement, but was able to receive all A’s in my junior year and proved I got better.
I took around 6 AP classes, and 5 Honor classes. (Huge upward grade trend)
I have 100+ volunteer hours, California Senate and Congress recognition award, and a high degree black belt in martial arts to prove dedication in my sports. (Along with many medals from tournaments, notably one from UCB)
I am planning to major in Sociology/communcation/business.
My older sibling currently attends UCSD if that helps me in any way…?
My Personal statements are pretty strong in my opinion.
UC’s are very GPA focused so with an UC GPA of 3.77, it will be tough even with an upward grade trend and good test scores. You have good HS course rigor, some good awards and EC’s but these do not makeup for lower than average grades. Strong personal statements can help. UCS’ do not consider legacy so no help there.
I would still apply to a couple of UC’s on your current list, but add in UCSC/UCR and/or UCM for Match schools. I would also look at the top Cal States such as Cal Poly Pomona/SLO, SDSU, CSULB and Cal state Fullerton. A UC is not a golden ticket and if you apply yourself, you can be successful anywhere.
Thank you for your kind and fast reply!
Yes, I applied to Riverside as a back up, along with CSU Pomona, CSU LB, SDSU, and SLO.
I recently got accepted into University of Oregon, and currently waiting for UConn and Chapman Univ, to get back to me very soon!
I will update my status as more admission decisions come out!
It reports stats for a UC GPA range of 3.70-3.99, which you can compare with the 3.40-3.79 data that Gumbymom provided. (The stats in that link are for admitted students, not enrolled students, which are lower on account of yield.)
Washington considers standardized test scores to be “important” and GPA and course rigor to be “very important.”
Your ACT is solidly in the middle 50% of the 800 freshmen from California who enrolled at UW last fall (27-32), but your unweighted GPA is below the middle 50% of enrolled freshmen (3.64-3.93; average 3.78). UW’s Common Data Set reports the unweighted GPA of enrolled freshmen in 2015 as follows:
3.75 to 4.00: 64.24%
3.50 to 3.74: 27.16%
3.25 to 3.49: 6.52%
3.00 to 3.24: 1.52%
Under 3.00: 0.56%
Thus, GPA will be an issue. However, your course rigor and ECs are great, and your personal story of overcoming adversity and achieving all As in your junior year may carry the day for you.
