UC GPA: 3.55 -- This number may seem misleading... I go to one of the top 3 high schools in the country, so even a 3.5 is considered good! To give you an example.... USC usually admits 70% of those who apply from my school.

Major Extracurriculars:
4yr Varsity Water Polo
2yr Varsity Swimming / 2yr JV Swimming
4yr Club Water Polo -- Junior Olympic Gold Medalist!
Summer job at an engineering/consulting firm (2 summers)
Summer job as an assistant mechanic (2 summers)

I really love UCSB, and would like to go there, but I'm wondering what my chances of getting in are. Does UCSB take the high school prestige into account at all?

I'd give it a 80 percent chance. UCSB is gettin pretty hard to get accepted to, and your SATI is only slightly above average. Your EC's however, will stand out a lot.
---------------------------------------Bottom Line
You have to apply to Davis, Irvine, and Riverside as backups, and have UCLA or Berkeley as your reach.

The only other UC's I applied to are UCLA and UCB; however, at the moment, if I were to get into all three, I would go to UCSB. I love the laid back atmosphere there and it seems like a perfect fit for me. This is why I was so curious about my chances at UCSB specifically.

I also applied to CU-Boulder, Tulane, Vanderbilt, USC, UMich, Boston College, and Claremont McKenna. I've already been accepted to Boulder, and I wouldn't mind going there, so I don't really need any more safetys.

Any opinions on my chances at Santa Barbara? Also, do they look at the prestige of my high school at all?

hey! I applied harvard westlake in 7th grade (obviously i don't go there, but I moved anyway so it doesn't matter does it?) I think you have a pretty good chance at UCSB. I think the fact your a j.o. water polo player would be a plus. Do you have interest in water polo in college (cuz I'm surprised you weren't recruited)?

i'm sorta being recruited but right now the coach just stepped down and they are looking for a replacement... so I really can't count on anything from that department. I'm just getting nervous since SB is my top choice... but the UC's are pretty much a numbers game, and if they look at my 3.55 the same way they look at a 3.55 from sombody at a mediocre public school, I could get screwed :(

My SATs are well above average at UCSB, and I'm hoping that the fact that I've had success in water polo/swimming and some good summer jobs will help push me over the edge at SB.

Any more insight? I'd like as much as possible :) So far the response has been quite positive!

I'm a junior at UCSB. Word of advice if you don't get accepted...appeal and I'm sure they'll let you in. Yeh, with so many great applicants, they might overlook you. But during the appeal process your profile will standout because it's rare for students with decent grades and strong SAT appeal as they have other alternatives. But I'm 100% sure you're in because of your SAT. Let me know when u get your acceptance letter =)

UCSB rocks!!! I also picked UCSB over UCLA and UCSD not just because of UCSB's beach and its beautiful campus but because their Bus. Econ. w/ emphasis in Acctng program is great and more students here are recruited by the Big 4 companies than UCB and UCLA combined.

Thanks for all the info folks! I really appreciate it. I've heard before that UCSB is decently generous on appeal, so if I get denied, I will appeal. Hopefully it won't come to that.

Anybody else want to evaluate my chances? :)

thanks for that link.... i've never seen it before.... looks like my SATI and II's are above average... but my GPA is still worrying me, oh well i guess only time will tell :)

Dude, you're in! I'm 100% sure of that now. I spoke to a friend who works at admission... if you have over 1300 SAT 1 and decent GPA you're definitely in.

100% considering he's got way higher SAT than yours. With his ECs, UCSB would definitely want him. If he's denied admission, I'm sure his file got mixed up and never reviewed..that's when appeal would be effective.
