Chances at UM and UCF

Hi,
I am a junior currently and interested in applying to University of Miami early action. I sleep, eat, and dream about going to UM. I live in Florida. My 2nd choice is to apply to University of Central Florida.
My stats are:
4.25 weighted G.P.A. Rank: 15 of 520
I am Asian American
All APs and Honors from freshmen year to my coming senior year (I took Hard AP classes such as Biology, Chemistry, World History etc. and I took 3 years of Spanish)
1110 SAT(took twice and thinking to take one more time depending on the opinions I get from you guys, got a 10 on the essay)

Extra-cirricular include:
Vice President of future health presidents of america (3 years including if take senior year)
Historian of Spanish Club
Business Professionals of America (3 years including if i take senior year)
Chemistry Honors Society
National Honors Society
I am going to join Science Honors Society my senior year
I am going to join Weight Lifting team my senior year

I also have a job but I dont know if it matters or not to colleges.

Thanks in advance

You would have a better chance applying ED, try raising your sat score to 1200, that should get you in.

Is that 1110 with Math and Verbal combined only? I'm assuming so, but either way, you definitely want to raise it. The reality is, with each increment of 50to 100 that your test scores rise, your chances of getting in at the college of your choice increase dramatically.

Must be something about Florida. Seems that quite a few people there get great grades, but have some (relative) problems with the SAT. (Most people in other parts of the country with 4.2 GPAs would have around 1350+ SATs for two parts).

If you look at the University of Miami, it seems to be reflected in their stats. They have an average weighted GPA for their class of 4.0 , but an average SAT of around 1260 (620CR/640M).

Obviously, they focus on the GPA, which is good for you, but you realize the 1110 SAT is your main problem. If you can get your SAT up even 50 points (to 1160) you'll be at their 25% level--which should get you in on ED or EA. If not, I would apply RD and hope like heck.

And yes, the fact that you have a job does matter to colleges--it shows initiative on your part--and that you don't think money grows on trees.

Good luck to you.

Thanks for the replies. The 1110 sat score is out of 1600 and includes only math and verbal.
Does UM or UCF have the better premed program? Also, are my chances at UCF pretty good? I was hoping UCF would be safety.

Raise your SAT score and it will greatly improve your chances. Why not ED to Miami if you want it so bad? The worst thing they could do is defer you to RD. UCF is pretty much a crap school imo, also apply to UF and FSU whose programs are levels above UCF. There is no such major as pre-med btw.

What are you talking about. UCF while not a great school is not that bad. It is going to be the second best state school in about a year in Florida. Almost everyone I know in my school has that as their number 1 school behind UF.

UCF is a very well liked school. I dont know why mr. Pinecrest is ragging on it.

UF would be a reach. They denied a few in-state 1400 SAT's, 4.0+ gpas, with tons of ECs from my school. It's getting very hard to get into.

UCF has a decent med program, but I also know that UM has an accelerated med program that is well respected.

Heh, no way. You are saying UCF will surpass FSU? Never, not in 100 years. I even consider UCF to be 4th behind UF, FSU, USF and almost behind New College of Florida (which the scores are far superior than of UCF) which is slowly rising the ranks of LACs.

UCF is MUCH better then USF. NCF is a great school (it's damn new too).

MUCH better is a stretch. I'd say they are more equal than that with USF having the slight advantage. UCF's reputation sucks and no one graduates.

Raise that SAT for Miami. A high SAT there will get you good scholarship money too. They aren't too good with financial aid, so shoot for a scholarship, although I assume you get a decent amount of money from the state. You are already in the top 3% and have an A average, the higher the test scores, the higher the scholarship. A 1280 would get you 1/4, 1300-1/3, 1350-1/2, 1400-3/4. Study, most kids don't have the grades you do, and if you do well on these tests, it will save your family thousands of dollars, not to mention get you into the college of your choice. Apply ED, they have more money avaliable to their ED applicants. Good luck!

War Chant (obviously a FSU student or alumnus) wrote:

Heh, no way. You are saying UCF will surpass FSU? Never, not in 100 years.

According to Princeton Review:
Academic Rating: UCF--74, FSU--70
Average GPA of admitted students: UCF--3.8, FSU--3.73
Average SAT scores of admitted students: UCF: 1186 (589/597), FSU--1164 (580/584)

Now, obviously I don't know how good the schools are in all the academic areas, but this would seem to imply that it might be a little less than 100 years before UCF is considered on par with FSU.

I do agree with War Chant, however, that UF is a real stretch for you. It is a great school and rated by lots of different sources as one of the "best deals" in the country for a college education.

Well I think it all depends. going back to the first post. a lot of UM has to do with money...I know of people not all that bright who are very well off and got into UM. Its a great school though.
UF is strange.... I know people this year with 1280+ and 4.0+ GPAs thats didnt get in... but my friend... who had a 1060 sat score got accepted (although she had a high GPA and applied early decision which is supposed to increase your chances).

Also , some fascinating information about FSU, UF and UM graduates who are medical school hopefuls.

Percentage of students who (in 2005) successfully were admitted to a US allopathic medical school:

FSU - 6.62% accepted

UF - 6.25% accepted

UM - 4.96% accepted

UCF - **

You stand a decent chance of entry at FSU with your SAT; assuming the other credentials are more indictive of success.

The Honors Program at FSU has an early medical entry program. You would need to raise your SAT to at least 1300 for direct entry, though. Unlike UCF, Florida State actually has a medical school.

wow, parent2noles, I didn't even know USNW rated all this stuff--good info

Actually, I dislike ratings - I think far too many people dwell on them.
