Chances at UMCP

I'm a rising senior and was wondering about my chances at UMD-CP:

Location: Virginia -- about 22 miles from UMD but technically out of state :(

Race: Asian/Pacific Islander

GPA
Unweighted: 3.62
Weighted: 3.667

SAT
1860/2400 1230/1600 (650 Math, 580 CR, 630 Writing)

ACT
31 (34 english, 33 math, 31 reading, 27 science)

-- I sent both scores to UMD

Freshman year GPA: 3.50

Sophomore year GPA: 3.86

Junior year GPA: 3.5 (Unweighted), 3.64 (Weighted)

AP's:
Junior year:
AP Computer Science A
AP US History

Senior year:
AP Computer Science AB
AP Chemistry
AP Physics B
AP Government

EC's:
-member of three honor societies

Assuming my essay, recs, etc. are all average, what chances do I have?

I'd say you have a pretty good shot, especially being a minority. The only glaring issue is you SAT score, so you might want to retake it.

^ But wouldn't my ACT score compensate for it?

Asians are actually not really minorities at UMD...

great act score

Then why can't you get a better SAT? That is what UMD is going to ask as well.

So, I should take the SAT again? Btw, UMD superscores the SAT right? Also, what should my SAT superscore be for it to not be an issue? I assume around 2000?

Here are per sections scores of the middle 50% first year students(from CB website)
CR: 570-680
Math: 600-700
I don't know about writing but I hear the admissions crew will read your SAT essay. Your math score is good enough as it is, but you should raise your reading score to about 630 or so.

Btw I am applying to UMD as wel. I am also asian and OOS! (MA)
My stats are very similar to yours, 1930SAT(580 reading, 740 math, 610 writing). What do you plan to major in?

P.S. I like your user name =)

lol, I like your username too.
I chose Mechanical Engineering as my intended major and Electrical Engineering as my alternate. How about you?

Maryland counts the ACT like the SAT as long as you have taken the essay component. A 31 on the ACT is very good. The middle 50% of admitted students last year got between a 28 and 31. If you make sure your recs and essay are good, I think you have a good shot.

Wow engineering huh? I plan to major in business and when I visited the campus, I participated in the adopt a student program, which is where I follow a student around for a whole day, sitting in in his classes and everything. The student was an engineering major and after listening to his classes and the inputs of other students, the general opinion is that engineering majors have it hard. Their workload is much harsher than a business major and other majors. According to them, business majors can party everyday and still get by lmao. I don't mean to discourage you or anything...just a heads up :/
